I am researching the origin of the Word of Wisdom and its application during the early years of the Church. Did I really believe that drinking coffee or tea would prevent me from going to Heaven??? I realize now how comical it is.

The word of wisdom is basically taken from a pamphlet for a 18th Century diet fad, and re-written to sound all scriptural. If it had been written today, we would all be basically living the LA diet or the Atkins, or what ever was popular this week.

Also, if you find you don't like coffee that is OK. I still haven't gotten used to it.

I also discovered I like nice beer, but not cheep beer. That followed some advice I received from this very page not even a week ago.

I too thought that coffee swillers were damned to terrestrial rewards at best. Now I find myself at Starbucks everyday ordering the cinnamon dolce latte. It's funny, but drinking my daily latte is one of the simple pleasures that makes my life more enjoyable.

Mmm-mmm, I love my morning coffee. I was embarrassed I learned how to make it from a guest in my home at the end of a dinner party. Why gives a dinner party and doesn't even know how to brew the coffee to go with the pie?

That would be me.

That's what's behind most of the Mormon commandments. Obey the leaders, no matter how stupid the command. Remember, obedience is the first law of heaven, and the first rule of thugs.

For fun, watch the documentary Gangland. Every gang they discuss talks about how their members got to live "upright" and have good standing in their community, blah, blah, blah. You quickly learn how meaningless all the BS talk is, and how you got to look at the end behavior instead.

I do love coffee!! I just found out that obedience to the Word of Wisdom wasn't required to enter the temple until 1902. Brigham Young wasn't so strict regarding tobacco and alcohol.

It is Father Michael's coffee. Father Michael is an Orthodox priest from the monastery near Goldendale, Washington. It's wonderful stuff, and it will make you quit feeling guilty. Each cup brings you closer to heaven. Check out:

Start with "Eastern Queen" blend. 'Swonderful. Truly. Would I lie to you?

There are probably more than a hundred studies supporting the health benefits of coffee.

Coffee has anti-cancer properties. Coffee drinkers are 50% less likely to get liver cancer. Coffee consumption is also tied to lower rates of breast, colon, and rectal cancers.

It also has protective effects against heart disease, diabetes, and (in men,) Parkinson's disease.

shortly after those new-fangled coffee shops started opening up in London and Europe, people started hanging out and talking up all kinds of crazy ideas.

the point being before this, you couldn't drink water 'cause it had critters that would make you sick.

So people drank fermented drinks which were, at least, safe.

But brewed coffee is also critter free, and a safer alternative to getting sloshed.

et viala. The Enlightenment.

When you say you still feel bad, do you mean you feel guilty or do you feel bad physically. If it's a matter of guilt then you may still be thinking it is a sin. If you feel bad physically then it's something else. I can drink some brands of coffee and have to run to the B/R constantly and other brands I'm just fine. Some people like black coffee, some with cream and/or sugar, some with a lot of cream and/or sugar. Some like their coffee really weak and some reall strong. I am in the middle. Hope this helps. Jim

I still feel bad in a guilty manner. It's only been a few days since I started to unearth the hidden truths about the Church. The more I discover, the less sense the Church teachings make.

Mormon folklore on caffeine. People avoid coffee or even the appearance of coffee...which means lifting a cup to one's lips in public should be avoided. Take your hot water in a styrofoam cup to keep from scandalizing the ever-watching ward members.

BUT... scuttlebut reveals many are secret Diet Coke addicts--or worse yet--scarfing down a Red Bill before their next meeting because His Holiness only prohibited coffee and tea....

My TBM friend who was in construction used to keep this HUUUUGE tub of Diet Pepsi going in his truck. He always had it there, just kept refilling it at the old convenience store. First thing in the morning, he was there in line filling up the tub (you could not really call it a cup) while heathens lined up for coffee. Why? He said it woke him up.

Go figure. Since Jesus had long hair, maybe he toted a DPepsi as well.

An old TBM co-worker of mine always had his big gulp size Mountain Dew with him at work. He would even get a refill halfway through the day. He had the nerve to rip on me for drinking my cup of coffee every morning! I never understood it.

Oddly, I ate some chocolate with coffee in it yesterday, by accident, twice.

Yuck!

I've never liked coffee. Must be an acquired taste.

I tried both coffee and wine and blech they are disgusting! Wine more than coffee but still..

All the while I'm drinking that bitter wine I'm thinking, really? They have to tell people not to drink this? It's nasty! I wouldn't have drank it all on my own w/o the WoW.
Then I told dh, you know if we were true TBMs I'd go running to the Bishop now and be punished for this..his response, isn't drinking it punishment enough? LOL!

Try a riesling they are very sweet,a good first wine, and generally not too pricey.

Try a Starbucks Frapuccino in the bottle. They are also very sweet and not bitter.

Try a framboise fruit beer. They are also very sweet and fruity.

Buy yourself a Keurig coffee maker and Ecobrew reuseable K-cups. The pre-filled K-cups offer a wonderful variety of coffees, teas and hot cocoas but with the Ecobrew cups you can use your favorite brand and save money, too.

You can also use the Keurig for just hot water (it gets very hot!) to use for your own hot cocoa, tea or Ramen noodles.

You still have kool-aid in your system. When that is gone, coffee will taste better.

Give yourself permission to be your own BOSS! Try anything within reason, just remember Socartes and "avoid extremes" and you'll be fine. Everyone else is!

Experiment. Find what you like to drink. If it upsets your stomach, for instance, that's a good reason to try something else. I like different kinds of teas and coffees.

It's just personal preference.

Billions of people have been and are drinking tea and coffee and live to be over 100 and doing just fine!
Or so I'm told! :-)

I've been on a couple business trips, tried red and white wine.

Awful. Especially the red wine. I was hoping for a better experience.

I've tried it several times. Still waiting for a good experience.

Rum and coke, now that is OK. Depends on the rum.

Coffee, yuck!

I cold brew my coffee. It reduces the acid:

By the way

You are not required to eat or drink anything you don't like.
That is one of the freedoms you take back when you leave the church. You get to decide, nobody else. If you feel guilty about it, ask yourself why. Don't punish yourself for rules others made that have nothing to do with you.

Lots of religions have weird random rules. Just think, if you were leaving the 7th day adventists, you would be stewing about the bacon you had for breakfast. Do you think God would look down on you for having bacon for breakfast? Same thing. Coffee, bacon, whatever. Bacon can pile on the LB's and clog your arteries. Moderation in all things.

It's taken me a while, but I now enjoy my latte as much as anyone who never had any affiliation with TSCC ever has. What's interesting is that my TBM (but independent-minded NOMish) daughter has been drinking frappucinos for some time and has no problem with that. The chokehold of the cult is beginning to slip more and more.

I've loved the smell of coffee ever since i was at university. When i first tried it -finally- a few months ago, making sure it was black and unsweetened as per Dr. Oz's direction, i was in for a rude awakening. It tasted like burned sticks. It didnt get much better, even when i added the sugar to it.

However, i tried a cappachino with whipped cream and that was delicious- and way too sweet for regular consumption.

I bot myself some cappachino candy canes for christmas and my new fav. chocolate bar is coffee crisp.

I do like trying different teas tho. maybe i'm just more british :)

how quickly and (seemingly) easily you are making this transition. You are a force of nature. Here's hoping there aren't stormy times for you (or us) on the horizon.

I hope you are getting from the board what you came here to get. Best wishes to you.

Thank you. I do have some fear because my life was so involved with the lds community. But I live on the East Coast where there are many non lds individuals too :-)) I'm sure it won't always be easy. But I am ok with that. And I still believe that God will help me. Just not in the way the lds faith might think ;-)

I didn't like coffee at first. I tried several types I found Millstone brand at Wallmart I got Chocolate Velvet I drink it with 2 Raw Stevia packets and Natrial Bliss creamer. It is wonderful I drink at least 2 cups in the morning and maybe one en the evning. As far as wine try a Ice wine (desert wine) It costs a little bit but it is gooood. Sangria is very good too. By the way the original WoW said no hot drinks but was inturperated as coffee and tea. TBMs like there hot coco and Postom and Pero. Caffiene came after that as the reason for not drinking coffee and tea hot coco and for that matter Chocolate have caffiene in it. I tricked my mom into tasting chocolate coffee and she liked it.
