He was superb in Fargo and Boogie Nights and E.R. and Jurassic Park III. But is he a Mormon? And is he a G.A.? I thought only general authorities always used their middle initials...ala, Richard G. Scott, Marion D. Hanks, Robert D. Hales, Boyd K Packer, etc.

Ever notice that it's only the mindless Mo's that use middle initials for all of their leaders? What gives?

Ya, I don't get the middle initial thing too. Always bugged me. With the Screen Actors Guild they aren't allowed to have two actors with the same name. That's why Canadian actor Michael J. Fox had to use his middle initial because there previously was a Michael Fox in the union. Possibly that's Bill Macy's problem.

...although it would totally ROCK to have William H. Macy as a GA! He'd shake that place up a bit.

in Shameless. He'd make a great GA.

He once stated "I am Lutheran down to my socks". Not good GA material.

So many mormons have the same name that the only way to distinguish them from each other is with a middle initial.

A holdover from polygamist colonies?

It is NOT true that all General Authorities use their middle initial. Because of their great humility, the following have forgone that affectation:

L. Tom Perry
M. Russell Ballard
D. Todd Christofferson
H. David Burton
L. Whitney Clayton
C. Scott Grow
W. Christopher Waddell
F. Michael Watson
W. Craig Zwick
J. Devn Cornish
O. Vincent Haleck

and still GAs though Emeriti:

F. Enzio Busche
J. Richard Clarke
F. Melvin Hammond
W. Eugene Hansen
F. Burton Howard
L. Lionel Kendrick
W. Rolfe Kerr
H. Burke Peterson
L. Aldin Porter

and let me not forget the Father of Correlation, the late:
N. Eldon Tanner

Maybe it needs to be pointed out that many of these people have the same name as their fathers, etc. so it's natural that they would use a middle initial or a middle name.
Just like in many families that are not LDS.

>...many of these people have the same name as their father...

Boyd K. Packer's father was Ira W. Packer.
L. Tom Perry's father was Leslie Perry.
Russell M. Nelson's father was Marion C. Nelson.
Dallin H. Oaks' father was Lloyd E. Oaks.
M. Russell Ballard's father was Melvin Ballard.
Richard G. Scott's father was Kenneth Leroy Scott.
Robert D. Hales' father was John Rulon Hales.
Jeffrey R. Holland's father was Frank D. Holland.
David A. Bednar's father was Anthony George Bednar.
Quentin L. Cook's father was J. Vernon Cook.
D. Todd Christofferson's father was Paul Vickery Christofferson.
Neil L. Andersen's father was Lyle Andersen.
Luke Skywalker's father was Anakin Darth Vader Skywalker.

Those pesky facts seem to indicate otherwise. What's the deal with the initials?

Don't forget the rule that if your name is exactly the same as a previous GA then you use the whole name.

Examples:

Ezra T. Benson and Ezra Taft Benson

Joseph F. Smith and Joseph Fielding Smith

Is it true that girls don't get a middle name when they are born, but wait until they marry and their husbands give them a "secret" name so the husband can call them through the vail at death?

Did I get my religions mixed up?

I use my middle initial for legal purposes (I'm female), as does most of my family.
None of them are mormon, and I am exmo.
