It hit me last week how much TBM's use the word obedient. It started while I was at my dentist (who is TBM) and he was commenting on how it was obvious that I floss every day. He said that it was good that I was so obedient. I laughed and said, "I DO floss every day, but I'm not obedient" He had no idea how to react to that. He kind of half laughed and said "what is that supposed to mean?"
I had to attend a TBM funeral later in the week and while there there I heard the word used often as well. While I was in the car with my TBM sister, she used the word to describe someone, and was using it as a compliment. I couldn't help myself and told her that obedience was for slaves. Surprisingly she agreed with me.
I think that the mormon mindset that greatly values obedience, considering it a virtue, is one of the biggest arguments to call it a cult.
Why would normal free thinking human think that obedience was a virtue?
