Interesting. There was a Mormon couple who served with me in the Peace Corps. They both seemed very liberal and progressive for stereotypical LDS folk. When I knew them, I didn't know much about the church. Now that I've learned about it, I wonder how in the world they stay in it.

the acceptance of patriarchal order (a fundamental Mormon teaching) is the antithesis of feminism.

They are not, however, active in the church <surprise, surprise>. The article says they are “on the brink of leaving” and one describes herself as merely “culturally Mormon.” So the term/oxymoron “feminist Mormon” is not applicable to these women.

As all of us here know only too well from our research (and some from personal experience,) no Mormon woman can be an outspoken feminist without facing church discipline. The article readily admits, “The potential consequences for those who criticize Mormon doctrine are substantial.”

I find it highly encouraging that some Mormon women are refusing to remain silent and are breaking out of the chains that bound them!
