I know a ward couple that was building their Mega-Mansion; (MSOFT millionaires).

another ward member, a 'builder' (not sure if he was a licensed contractor) ripped them off with double & triple billing for materials, etc. more than $150,000. He'l NEVER be able to repay them.

Bp found out abt this, he: Made them give a talk in church about 'integrity'! Not sure if this was prosecuted.

Bible & D&C says restitution is required for repentance, 4 X amount taken.

Question (without restitution, per the scriptures): Will the builder EVER be eligible for a TR?

what say ye?

Probably. Mormons don't take the D&C as a code so serious that it supersedes something like the atonement, or the ability to repent. Other than a few sections, most of that book is ignored.

more like guidlines to be sure" or sumthin like that ...Pirates of the Carribbean.
here it is:
And thirdly, the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules. Welcome aboard the Black Pearl, Miss Turner .
so the Bible and the D&C are more like guidlines!! :)

So the direct question is can he qualify for a temple recommend in the future even though he doesn't fulfill the law of restitution?

Yes.

It happens all the time - there are many things people can't/don't provide restitution for. The Mormon belief is that is where the atonement comes in and makes up the difference. For example, according to Mormon belief you can never provide restitution for having sex with someone outside of marriage, but you can eventually qualify for a temple recommend again.

it occurs to me that:

a) the offender is going to think they're absolved; partially b/c they gained admittance to God's Holy House...

b) anything less that restitution isn't going to make the victims whole, which they should be.

Don't the leader see that when they ignore/Cherry Pick that they're putting OUT as many as they're 'Letting In'?

i guess not.

I have a family member who has cheated many people and been sued for bad practices, and he holds a temple recommend. The TR is simply a license that is paid for.

The great part is that the person who ripped them off for all the money doesn't really have to worry about restitution. All they have to worry about it being sufficiently contrite in front of the Bishop.

In Mormonism it's all about the Church. Qualifying for a TR means they no longer have to feel guilty about ripping someone off since they've been "forgiven."

But in Mormonism the "forgiving" comes from the Church and has nothing to do with the actual victims who can still be hung out to dry.
