The RS presidency in my ward emails us a weekly newsletter. This week's thought to ponder is:

"Don't think too much. You'll create a problem that wasn't there in the first place."

Maybe I should give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it's tongue in cheek.

"Don't Think."

Priceless!

Absolutely essential words for those Mormons attempting to protect their testimonies, which they assert are solid as the rock of ages, but which they obsessively protect as if they were made of sugar glass.

But I do meet people who complain that they think too much and want to stop it. What they are really doing is going over and over the same issue in in the same very irrational, black and white way. I don't call that thinking. That's more like ruminating and perhaps holding a grudge. You know, going over and over the same criticisms of yourself and others and coming out with the same feelings of hurt and anger.

In a group like RS or the ward neighborhood, it's probably very easy to take things as slights and magnify them.

The RS could have found a better epigram, such the one I work on:

Don't take anything personally!

"Don't take anything personally" would be perfect for this ward.

Don't think too much. You might end up figuring out what it is they don't want you to think about.

Don't think about where that 10% goes
Don't think about what you could be doing besides going to church.
Don't think about cleaning your house, while cleaning the church.
Don't think what it would be like for spouse to be home in eve.
Don't think about if your getting the truth from leaders.
Don't think about how unqualified bish. is to council you.
Don't think about all the things on your shelf.
Don't think about how long this list can get.

Good lord you'd have to go brain dead to follow that advice.

Priceless (and not in the good way). I just shared this on my FB wall, saying that it came from an inspirational newsletter (trying not to overtly hurt and embarrass our TBM sons, but still wanting to make the point). What's funny about these sorts of posts I put (about thinking, reasoning, acting for one's self, never allowing others to control your life, etc.) is that many of my TBM family and friends will "like" it, not realizing that I'm aiming it squarely at them. Hopefully SOMEone will have a thought niggle at them at some point, starting the process of detaching their minds from the Organization of Control, i.e. church. Who knows? But, I'm going to keep trying.

Here's a better one, that is even scriptural:

"Be not righteous over much..." Ecclesiastes 7:16

Good quote to use on TBMs.

Love it! Maybe I'll email them and suggest it.
