I find it funny that the story of the garden of eden - the story that so much of Christianity holds onto - fits wonderfully about leaving religion. (I find that other postmo's have had similar thoughts to me, but I'm repeating it...)

You're told by the church not to partake of the knowledge - don't eat the fruit. But we, persuaded by someone who did it before, who we wouldn't have eaten the fruit if it weren't for them, who we loved, ate it. We then have to leave the church, the garden. It was wonderful, it was our home. We sometimes wish we could return. But we can't. Even if the church may didn't kick us out, it's impossible to return. The tree of knowledge was so much more worth it. For the rest of our existence, we no longer rely on God. We have to work to find our own answers. God may still be there, but not in the way that we had him before. But as Joseph Smith wrote, eating the fruit was necessary that we might have joy. It isn't the same joy that we had before. It's deeper and more lasting.

In the name of the Great Holy Spaghetti Monster, amen.
