I've seen this topic before and always enjoyed it. For me it's Pink Floyd's dark side of the moon [ with the 6ft tall Quakers on back up vocals ]

When I was 18, this song had me convinced that Ian Anderson was merely dissaffected by the Church of England, and fantasized about meeting him and converting him to the true church. Funny how we can twist things to fit our own reality.

Madonna's "Survival."

"I'll never be an angel
I'll never be a saint, it's true.
I'm too busy surviving, whether it's heaven or hell
I'm gonna be living to tell
so here's my story, no risk, no glory."

As for the ex-mo side of things, it would have to be Hotel California: "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"

My experience was probably captured best by the song:

The Sound of Silence

by Simon and Garfunkel

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools", said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence

But I have to admit, when I think of LD$,Inc, Led Zeppelin's song Highway to Heaven also comes to mind:

There's a lady who's sure all that glitter is gold.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
And when she gets there she knows if the store are closed.
With a word she can get what she came for.

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure.
Cause she know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook there's a song bird who sings sometimes.
All of our thoughts are misgiven.

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west.
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thougts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune.
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long.
And the forests will echo with laughter.

And it makes me wonder.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow don't be alarmed now.
It's just a spring clean for the May-Queen.
Yes there two paths you can go by.
But in the long run.
There's still time to change the road you're on.

Your head is humming and it won't go - in case you don't know.
The pipers calling you to join him.
Dear lady can you hear the wind blow.
And did you know
your stairway lies on the whispering wind.

And as we wind on down the road.
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know.
Who shines white light and wants to show.
How everything still turns to gold.

And if you listen very hard
the tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all.
To be a rock and not to roll.

Go Ask Alice by Jefferson Airplane

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she’s ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell them a hookah smoking caterpillar has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small

When the men on the chess board
get up and tell you where to go
And you just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving slow
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the white knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "Off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said

Feed your head
Feed your head

Come Sail Away
by Styx

I'm sailing away,
Set an open course for the virgin sea,
'Cause I've got to be free,
Free to face the life that's ahead of me,
On board, I'm the captain, so climb aboard,
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore,
And I'll try, Oh Lord I'll try, to carry on

I look to the sea,
Reflections in the waves spark my memory,
Some happy, some sad,
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had,
We lived happily forever, so the story goes,
But somehow we missed out on the pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on

A gathering of angels appeared above my head,
They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said,
They said come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me lads,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me baby,
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me

I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise,
We climbed aboard their starship, we headed for the skies
Singing come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me lads
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me...

Hideaway by Erasure

One day the boy decided
To let them know the way he felt inside
He could not stand to hide it
His mother she broke down and cried
Oh my father
Why don't you talk to me now
Oh my mother
Do you still cry yourself to sleep
Are you still proud of your little boy
Don't be afraid
You don't have to hide away
The boy he was rejected
By the people that he cared for
It's not what they expected
But he could not keep it secret anymore
Far from home now
Waiting by the telephone
There's a new world
You can make it on your own
Are you still proud of your little boy
Don't be afraid
You don't have to hide away
Don't be afraid
Love will mend your broken wing
Time will slip away
Learn to be brave

A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harem
(it makes more sense than the BoM to me - much more!) I still perform this at least once a month - still love it! It really doesn't describe my Mo experience. It just makes more sense to me than Mo-ism does. I got disfellowshipped for playing Light My Fire on the ward organ (nobody was there!) - the bishoprick drove by, saw the lights on and that was that........
The one that most describes my Mo experience is Highway to Hell - ACDC

Whiter Shade of Pale
We skipped the light fandango
turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
but the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
as the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
the waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
as the miller told his tale
that her face, at first just ghostly,
turned a whiter shade of pale

She said, 'There is no reason
and the truth is plain to see.'
But I wandered through my playing cards
and would not let her be
one of sixteen vestal virgins
who were leaving for the coast
and although my eyes were open
they might have just as well've been closed

She said, 'I'm home on shore leave,'
though in truth we were at sea
so I took her by the looking glass
and forced her to agree
saying, 'You must be the mermaid
who took Neptune for a ride.'
But she smiled at me so sadly
that my anger straightway died

If music be the food of love [see note, left, about this verse + its opening]
then laughter is its queen
and likewise if behind is in front
then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
and attacked the ocean bed

Highway To Hell
Living easy, living free
Season ticket on a one-way ride
Asking nothing, leave me be
Taking everything in my stride
Dont need reason, dont need rhyme

Aint nothing I'd rather do

Going down, party time

My friends are gonna be there too, yeah

Im on the highway to hell

on the highway to hell

highway to hell

im on the highway to hell

No stop signs, speed limit

Nobodys gonna slow me down

Like a wheel, gonna spin it

Nobodys gonna mess me round

Hey satan, payed my dues

Playing in a rocking band

Hey momma, look at me

Im on my way to the promised land

OWWW

Im on the highway to hell

highway to hell

im on the highway to hell

highway to hell

ohhhhh

Don't stop me

yeah, yeah, owwww

im on the highway to hell

on the highway to hell

im on the highway to hell

on the highway to...HELL

highway to hell

im on the highway to hell

highway to hell

highway to hell

highway to hell

momma, highway to highway to hell

And Im going down, all the way down

Im on the highway to hell

De-lurking for the first time after years of reading

Secrets by OneRepublic

I need another story
Something to get off my chest
My life gets kinda boring
Need something that i can confess

Till all my sleeves are stained red
From all the truth that I've said
Come by it honestly I swear
Thought you saw me wink, no, I've been on the brink, so

[CHORUS]
Tell me what you want to hear
Something that will light those ears
I'm sick of all the insincere
So I'm gonna give all my secrets away
This time
Don't need another perfect lie
Don't care if critics ever jump in line
I'm Gonna give all my secrets away

My God, amazing how we got this far
It's like were chasing all those stars
Who's driving shiny big black cars

And everyday I see the news
All the problems that we could solve
And when a situation rises
Just write it into an album
Singing straight to cold
I don't really like my flow, no, so

[CHORUS]

Got no reason
Got no shame
Got no family
I can blame
Just don't let me disappear
I'ma tell you everything

[CHORUS x2]

All my secrets away (x2)

This would be a better "Praise to the Man" homage..... Think about Joe for this one:

Out of the clear blue cloudless skies
A bolt of lightning came
Were you at least a bit surprised
When angels spoke your name?

They said it's you
Who puts the gravity in the ground
They said it's you
Who all the stars revolve around
Scientists were wrong
And you suspected all along it might be true
The world belongs to you

No one escapes the things they've done
A fate that fits the crime
You've got a plan for everyone
Where do you find the time?

Because it's you
Dancing the planets on a string
And it's you who's got to handle everything
There'll be hell to pay
Unless we all behave the way you want us to
The world belongs to you

From inside these limousines
The world is looking darker every day
And you wonder if that means
That when you close your eyes it goes away
It goes away

Tie up your loose ends one by one
Your time is almost through
Even your angels think you're done
They roll their eyes at you
Because it's you
Who's getting bigger every day
And it's you
Who's gonna drive them all away
As they turn to go
You can forgive them for they know not what they do
The world belongs to you

I have climbed highest mountains
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
Burning like a fire
This burning inside her

I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

I believe in the Kingdom Come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
But yes I'm still running

You broke the bonds
And you loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Oh my shame
You know I believe it

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for

"Windows are rolled down" by Amos Lee.

For those of use who are older and lost damn near everything due to our unbelief this song in particular is hard to listen to. It just so happens that I have a thing about driving with the windows down. I love it, always have. after the fallout of my dissafection I almost died the day I heard it come over the radio.

It is a song to my children.

I'm crying now just posting this.

Look up, child The world is born
Shoe's untied And your soles are worn
Windows are rolled down Sun is setting high
Windows are rolled down I'm fixing to die

Corn rows have companion feel
This rocky road and this steering wheel
Who do you call to ease your pain?
I hope for you to get through this rain

Windows are rolled down Moon is hanging low
Windows are rolled down
Think it's time for me to go, hey

Is it what you dreamed it'd be?
Are you locked up in this fantasy?
Oh, this miles that have torn us apart
My new found faith and my broken heart

Windows are rolled down
Sun is rising high
Windows are rolled down
Feel that wind rushing by, hey
Windows are rolled down

Sun is rising high
Windows are rolled down
Feel that wind rushing by, hey

Windows are rolled down

MISFIT by Curiosity Killed the Cat

Sensitive child
keep running wild in a confined space

You're not to blame 'cause you're not the same

get on the case.
Crazy sheep
you are the odd one out

Crazy sheep
let them know what you're all about.

Misfit
freak that's on the street

Well
I can see the sorrow in your eyes.
How long
how low
how hiah can you gc
There'll be a bind for every kind
you'll see.

Sensitive child
your threat is so mild
it worries me.
Build yourself some protection to avoid the injection

Then you can be happy.
Crazy sheep
you are the odd on out

Crazy sheep
let them know what you're all about.

Misfit
freak that's on the street

Now I can see the sorrow in your eyes. . . .

Set your mode to emotion
your secret potion
Designed to satisfy your soul

And underneath your broken dreams
you need to satisfy your soul.

Misfit
freak that's on the street

Now I can see the sorrow in your eyes. . . .

Too fat
too thin
you lose or you win

This may come as some surprise.
Too tall
too short
too loose or too taut

There'll be a bind for every kind.

Misfit
freak that's on the street

Now I can see the sorrow in your eyes. . . .

Too fat
too thin
you lose or you win
. . .

You're got to satisfy your soul

And underneath your broken dreams
you need to satisfy your soul.
