I just wanted to point out with all these threads popping up lately that there is a medical case for being addicted to porn. However, what mormons generally refer to as being "addicted to porn" is not it. A real porn addict is someone who would be viewing and masturbating many times daily. They would do it at innapropriate times, like at work or on their phone during a meeting. They would spend a significant amount of time and money on it at the expense of all else in their lives.

Most mormon "porn addicts" are not addicted at all. The "addiction" is due largely in lart to the taboo nature of it. Human beings have a sexual appetite that must be satisfied and it is pretty rare to find a couple that can satisfy each other whenever it is needed. To all you non "porn addicts" out there I would like you to stop eating and tell me how long you last. Some people simply have a higher sex drive than others and these are the "porn addicts" referred to by tscc.

I realized this was true when a therapist suggested I attend a non-mo sexaholics anlnymous group. (I have been to lds arp before). I realized that my "addiction" of 1-7 times /week would get me laughed out of such a meeting.

The human body is a beautiful thing and there is nothing wrong with wanting to look at it. Couples need to decide between themselves, without help from the church, what is acceptable to them and then stay within those limits.

I miss the days when we had to go searching for Dad/Grandpa/Older Brother's magazine "stash" to get a look. Oh how I remember studying Grandpa's adult magazines (and getting a burning in the bosom) from the 70's, 80's, and early 90's. Long story short, I feel for all you guys who had to endure the days before shaving, waxing, and laser hair removal!

GASP! Do you mean that if I take my phone to the bathroom with me at work for a 10 minute break I am a porn addict? Or do you mean like viewing porn at the desk and masturbating in public? ha.

Haha you can take your phone to the can and rub one off on occassion. If that's all you do then i'd say you may have a problem, not for sure though. Maybe you could use your phone to take a video of the occurence and then
bring it to the bishop and ask for his
opinion. After all, he is highly untrained to deal with these situations and relies heavily on the first thing that pops into his head to guide his flock

My answer was going to be "nothing", but your answer is better.

And. I would argue that if a person is masturbating in public, or other inappropriate forums, that person does not have a porn addiction, rather, that person probably is diagnosable as being afflicted with DSED.

My addiction to pornography cost me everything I owned. I was addicted to the worst/ most graphic kind of pornogrpahy, the 3D porn of reality. I was so addicted to it that I had a live in pornography model living with me to give me my porn fix! The porn Model got pregnant...... several times. I was so addicted to porn that I kept her around anyway. You are not going to believe this, but I bought her a house, a car, and fed and clothed her children!
Thats how addicted I was to porn. WHen I realized how abusive this
Situation really was, I decided to cure my porn addiction. Porn just wasnt worth it at this point so got rid of this pornography model, who I finally realized really did not care for me at all and who was only in it for all the things she could get.

NOW the MORmON church is pissed off at me for being divorced. The first lessson is that Porn can cost a person everything they have. The really big lesson is that its IMPOSSIBLE to please the (FUCKING) MORmON church, who was really responsible for me having a live in porn model in the first place ! Thanks a lot

Lucky: You sound like you may have lived the life of Charlie Sheen. How the hell did you buy houses and cars and take care of a porn model? That sounds like a good story for the biographies section.

Here is the big difference:

Mormon view of porn addiction - viewing it more than once! And all those times you were looking at porn you could have been reading church approved materials or out spreading the good word.

Real world view of porn addiction: A) Most all of the things you mentioned in your post; and B) when you have an unrealistic view of sex and sexual relations, you know that you have a porn addiction problem.

Mormons think anything they aren't supposed to engage in or partake of can trap you somehow.

I am absolutely convinced that the Mormon obsession with what they have wrongfully labeled as "porn addiction" is really a cult technique for controlling the flock. By whipping the good sisters into an unnecessary frenz they strengthen their grip on those women, and by proxy, their husbands.

Worse, by purposefully misusing the term "addiction", it diminishes what a true addiction is, and that is not helpful for those people who truly have addictions of any kind. This is one of the biggest issues I have with the cult, and it is ultimately what convinced me that it is an illegitimate farce.

That's what I think as well, that the Mormon definition of porn addiction is a cult mind control technique.

The Mormon definition IS (in our present culture) a most convenient mind control technique...and has NOTHING to do with anything real or anything factual.

(On the other hand, it is often MOST effective in keeping BOTH genders firmly within LDS mind control, and behavior control, parameters. Much of the time, it works perfectly.)

Funny enough I used to overthink about sex until I walked out of the church, now I barely about it and have fairly normal views on it. It's like being a member makes you believe you have all sorts of things wrong with you like GASP normal sexual feelings and curiosities, so what they expect you to overcome the "natural" man/woman to fit their distorted view of normal? Stupid church.

Mormonism (a metaphor): The donut is a perversion of natural food desires. Stay away from it! If you have partaken seek help with your unnatural urges. Talk with your bishop to seek help and spiritual counsel. He can direct you towards resources that can help. Do not touch the donut or soon you will desire three donuts, and then five donuts. Soon they will only satisfy you if they have sprinkles, powdered sugar, or frosting. Eventually (gasp) you may even desire a donut with fruity filling in the hole, the very depths of unnatural food desire.

Almost everyone else (same as above): Donuts: a treat is great but too much is a bad idea!

Nice metaphor.

That's what the fear-shame-guilt culture does to people. It turns an ordinary indulgence or impulse into a huge crisis. To escape all the suspense, people then have to turn to the otherwise trivial indulgence again and again to fight all the unnecessary anxiety.

The greatest American Porn story of all time is the factual, history of the Mormon church ITSELF!

Joseph Smith and all his fake (honest to God?) marriages -- old, young, with husband, no matter.

And Brigham Young with his Harem House, where he could only stable 20 of his 50 (or was it 55?) wives!

If it weren't for the federal government stepping in, Mormon leaders today would look just like the Warren Jeffs Group. Even with all the pressure from the Feds, it still took over a decade to root out LDS polygamy.

No Feds would have meant perpetual Mormon debauchery -- and that's porn in action -- live -- the real stuff.
