“ I am tomorrow, or some future day, what I establish today. I am today what I established yesterday or some previous day.”

“ Your battles inspired me - not the obvious material battles but those that were fought and won behind your forehead.”

“ Better pass boldly into that other world, in the full glory of some passion, than fade and wither dismally with age.”

James Joyce Irish novelist, 1882-1941

“ One life is all we have and we live it as we believe in living it. But to sacrifice what you are and to live without belief, that is a fate more terrible than dying.”

Joan of Arc quotes

" Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”

Buddha quotes (Hindu Prince Gautama Siddharta, the founder of Buddhism, 563-483 B.C.)

I love Thomas Payne. While I was searching for one of my favorite quotes of his, I found a cool website:

http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/57639.Thomas_Paine

I found a new one today:

“I have always strenuously supported the right of every man to his own opinion, however different that opinion might be to mine. He who denies to another this right, makes a slave of himself to his present opinion, because he precludes himself the right of changing it.”
― Thomas Paine, The Age Of Reason

I had this one taped to my fridge, until we replaced the fridge:

“Infidelity does not consist in believing, or in disbelieving; it consists in professing to believe what he does not believe.”
― Thomas Paine, The Age Of Reason

I think I liked that one because I decided I didn't pretend to believe. Rather than believing the negative label of "apostate" or "infidel", I realized that I was showing character by leaving. So many people in the church, particularly in Utah, just pretend to believe.

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away.”

― Henry David Thoreau

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.

That quote from the Dali Lama reminded me of Thomas Paine's quote about his own mind being his own church.

This one is particularly profound. I think it needs to be laminated on my fridge.

+1 to this Buddha quote ... I remember noting this particular one while still working my way out of TSCC.

It is now laminated and on my fridge. I was not kidding! I own a laminator and all other manner of crafty stuff and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Yes, I do love it and it tangibly helped me leave the church.

It's almost like it was written for that purpose. And, if I'm not mistaken, about the same time Lehi left Jerusalem, give or take.

If I did not have a tower of dirty dishes calling my name, I would post some quotes. Maybe I'll have some time later. For now, this is one I keep in the forefront of my mind:

Just because someone says it does not make it true.
Just because many people believe it does not make it true.
Only if an idea is backed by imperical evidence can it perhaps be the truth.
And then only after serious investigation

My favs of his

•To me, the idea and expectation that the day is slowly and surely coming when we will be able to honestly say we are our brother's keeper and not his oppressor is very beautiful .

•Until man duplicates a blade of grass, nature can laugh at his so-called scientific knowledge....

•Its obvious that we don't know one millionth of one percent about anything.

•I believe that the science of chemistry alone almost proves the existence of an intelligent creator.

•We have merely scratched the surface of the store of knowledge which will come to us. I believe that we are now, a-tremble on the verge of vast discoveries - discoveries so wondrously important they will upset the present trend of human thought and start it along completely new lines .

I like his stuff. Paradigm shift anyone?
Laughs :P ... Thxs for the great lead in there Dave!
