As far as I know he's still alive but retired (or emeritus?) Wasn't it his son or grandson who was arrested last year for BASE jumping off the church office building?
When my brother was at BYU he was the general authority at stake conference at the old Provo tabernacle. The girl who gave the opening prayer asked for special blessings on "Hartman Rectum Jr." After the amen the whole congregation burst out laughing.
I served with his son in the England London Mission. I hear his son is a administrator at the U of U. His son, and another GA son were in the same district as I for awhile. It was great for me to hear about all the royal treatment the mormon heirarchy received while my parents toiled in blue collar jobs. It was the beginning of the end for me in TSCC. So that thank you - you two.
I remember the Hinkster making fun of HRJ mid-west accent (i.e. from Missouri) one time in a general conference. He was a great story teller.
My uncle knew him and made me an appointment to visit with him 1-on-1 before my mission. Of course I went, and he told me to be a good missionary.
At the LTM (Language Training Mission in Provo), he came to talk to all the mishies. He predicted that eventually the Lord would "turn off the water" and then "the end wouldn't be far off." Afterwards, I went up to say hi to him, but he didn't remember me.
I still thought he was cool, though, since his name and JS' name were both only two names + a Jr.
