I think it was prolly rum. Cheap. Easily available. Only mildly hallucinogenic.

Also rum was pretty widely available. However, other contenders would be whiskey or bourbon.

I would put my money on moonshine though. Very cheap and easily made, was produced in huge quantities by people all over the frontier (where JS was living) and if made poorly could have some nasty side effects.

1. The article incorrectly concludes that JS was wrongly jailed.
2. JS also wrote letters complaining about his lawyers despite the fact that they effectively saved his life.
3. I wonder what was paid to the guards to escape. Someone should make a true movie about the whole history.
4. Whatever JS drank in jail should be a best seller, surely someone put it in writing.
