It seems many posters on RFM do so as anon and have a paranoia of getting busted by their Mormon bishop, friends, relatives, or even church spies.

But does this EVER really happen? Do ANY TBM's (aside from creepy mopologists like Daniel C. Peterson) really read this site frequently enough, if AT ALL, that they would catch some poster that they know?

It seems unbelievable to me that this would actually happen, but it seems so many of you are afraid of this happening. Has this ever happened here? Has anyone ever actually been caught posting on RFM by a Mormon?

(I am not referring to someone walking into the room when you are on the computer, but someone actually browsing the this site and reading your post from their own computer)

I didn't get caught posting here, but I was so scared the first time I logged onto this site. I was at the library and I was so scared that someone I knew would catch me looking at an anti mormon website. I was terrified as to what would happen to me if I was found out, but now, 2 years later I actually walked up to a mishie and told him that my QUAD burned real well in the fireplace! I aint afraid no more!

One day it occured to me that this board, and the liquor store, and the coffee house, the bar, hooters, casino, smoke shoppe, and every other such place was completely safe.

Mormons won't go in, or even look in the general direction. They stay as far as they can. I've never seen a spy (perhaps they are just amazing spies).

In any case they fear this board. They fear the bar. They fear these all. Any you do encounter are already sympathizers.

That's what I would assume. No Mormons would be on this site unless they are questioning themselves.

Personally,

1) I know a handful of posters in real life, and at times when I reply to someone I reveal personal details that they don't know, and that I'd like to keep private.

2) I'm still hurting and sometimes don't even want a screen-name attached to the emotions I put into something I say.

I believe (and my son concures) that the church checks this site regularly and if they read anything that would be easy to trace, they find the IP address. unless you are writing from a wi-fi or internet cafe, through the IP address they can know exactly where something has come from

My understanding is that only the board owners (and law enforcement) have the ability to check IP address. No need to worry about that.

Police would have to get a subpoena to get them. And even then IPs are an art not a science. I can see IPs but I sure can not see who you are or where you live.

some woman wrote a hysterical rant to her TBM cow sister on this board. Sister had already ratted her out to the family by identifying her from reading the board.

It was caustic and funny as hell. I forwarded it to a couple of friends (Lily conundrum). Wish I had saved it.

So the answer is yes. At least in one instance.

Tal Bachman. Not specifically here, but his contributions came back to bite him in the ass. Don't know the specific details, but...

Yes! Many check this board from what I heard and know. Besides, often someone a first-time (still mo) comes in here to tell us that they been lurking for some time. The morg knows that either investigators (or when a Mormon runs for office) will google mormonism etc. and find this. Many of the morg's teachings have changed or dropped becaus of 'internet distractors.

I don't really want my brother in law or nephews to know what I am doing or where I am going.

And since I'm alone now I don't really want to share my information with strangers.

They won't even click on them. I could have used my real name here when I was leaving the Church and nobody would have ever known. I try to stay anonymous online generally though. I'm kind of an idiot, and I don't want documentary evidence of that fact to show up at job interviews.

no matter what website I am posting to. Hell, even my Facebook account is under an assumed name! If you google my name, my real name, it comes up exactly 3 places on the net. And I'm proud to have my name associated with those three places. On RFM, we tend to post personal feelings and information that I would not want to be in the hands of just anybody.

it now that I am no longer a member.

The problem is that family in general tend to be nosy and critical. It's like living in a small town and everyone knows your business and has something to say about it!

Go ahead, read my posts and if that is a problem for someone and they don't want me around them or their kids, or their relatives, that is their choice. I don't have anything to do with their decisions. If they are that afraid of me, I'm that big a threat to them, they are that negative toward me, I couldn't have a relationship with them anyhow, it would be impossible.

I don't get why people give anons a hard time about not registering a name.. We don't tell you guys how to post, so why pester us about it? (I'm not speaking to the OP here since he's just asking a question, but in the past I've been and seen others hounded about it many times)

It's not because of paranoia of getting busted that I for instance post as anon, it's simply the handle I choose to use.

Why does everyone think it needs to be more complicated than that?

There is no way to follow a particular "anon" when there are a dozen of them. Add a number or a letter and be consistent.
Otherwise, it's impossible to follow.
It's like a dozen people posting as: Jane, or Joe, or Mary. Which on is which when the name is the same?

"There is no way to follow a particular 'anon' when there are a dozen of them" -- yup exactly- We get that posting as anon in these instances isn't a benefit to others.

If we wanted to be followed in such a manner we would simply choose a new name at that point or flag our posts as you mentioned =)

No need to register, but please pick a name and be consistent with it.

This is a funny subject.
Mormons "want" to catch you doing something wrong so they can tattle on you (tell the Bishop, HT etc.). But, they can't expose themselves too much as not to be told on as well.
If you're in a bar, strip joint, R rated movie, chances are pretty slim anyone is going to see you. If they do, how do they explain it?
I got particularly drunk at the 1-2-3 club at Ft. Sil back in 1971. I was in there with 5 other LDS kids that had gone to training with me. They were NOT drunk, or smoking or groping the dancer. But, they were there. Nobody ever said a word.
Four months later I was in Scotland on a mission.
Go figure.

a tech to monitor it. This guy knew me a little. He stopped me in the hall one day to ask if I was the HeresyX that posted on the psoriasis user group. He had it to and just thought is was interesting. Talk about creepy. A month later he mentioned he'd seen what my tech son was posting about his hobbies. Ewww.

I have a brother who is a well known apologist and occasionally reads here. I don't think he is active now. I hope.

I live alone and don't much care what people think. I don't talk much about what I read here and do it for my own knowledge and entertainment.

I have been a member (convert of the Church) nearly 6 decades and I don't give a rat's ass. The LDS INC. is garbage of the worst sort and I am fed up to the Gills and this is what my wife who is an ex-missionary feels. We have to live by truth not by what TSCC Liars would have you believe. Our family has literally been hunted by those that would kill us. You get the message of how loving the church is! It isn't!

I worry about my DH reading my computer history so I use my phone or iPad and erase it every time. I lurked on here 6 months before posting something because I was afraid of getting emails he would see. I still don't follow subjects for fear he will see an email. I almost put in a name once on here then backed it out because RFM asked for my email address and I was afraid they would start sending me emails from here. Sometimes I'm afraid someone I know could google something and accidentally see a story I told about them. Sometimes I get on here and feel bold. Sometimes I'm hurting and feel bad with raw feelings still, and a lot of times I think I'm over it when then comes another episode. I've been totally out 4 months but guess it isn't long enough to "move on"
