OT Occupations with high suicide rate? Dentists?????

Saw the comment on another thread. I knew Police might have a high suicide rate. It would be hard to see the underbelly of society day after day and stay grounded.

But dentists have a high suicide rate? WhY? Because they pull teeth out of people all day? They get tired of the blood and gore they deal with daily?

The long hours they spend boring people?

Aside from the money, I can think of no reason a dentist's life would be particularly satisfying.

MOre money doesn't necessarily bring a proportionate level of happiness.

The high stress of dentistry, dealing with people who don't want to be there, intense, focused work, little interaction in meaningful conversation. I think it would be awful.

It is rougher than you think being in the dental field. More patients than not would rather have an OB/GYN or prostate exam than come to the dentist.

A speaker told us that the following occupations have the worst rates of depression:

1. Lawyers
2. Doctors
3. Dentists

I didn't know it was an occupational hazard. I had a previous dentist who committed suicide. He left a wife and 2 school-age daughters. I can't imagine what stresses he must have had to choose that course. I hope I never know what it's like.

I'm sorry to hear that. I had read that it's a good field for a woman because you can work part time if you wish. My own dentist (along with her colleague) takes every Friday off, hence a long weekend every weekend.

Because they administer anesthesia, they know how to use it to just go to sleep and never wake up. I'm sure it sounds like a good way to go if you're hating your life.

I guess dentist make sense... If I'd be seeing that many people with bad breath each day I'd be having serious problems too.
