As I am reading his biography, I really like this guy! He's a Rfm alumni posthumus. The chruch paints him as a back woods Missouri ruffian. However, the man studied medicine, held a school, and passed the law exam of the day in Utah, and became an attorney. However, his biography shows how such an intelligent man could be fleeced by bring-them-young.

Didn't he also blood atone a lot of people? Seems like I heard Michael Quinn say he was a "monster." Who wrote the biography?

In the late summer of 1857 Hickman and a buddy (Lot Smith)
conducted surprise raids on U.S. Army supply wagon trains,
destroying the provisions needed by large numbers of troops
in the cold weather that was fast approaching.

Hickman burned the wagons and supplies, telling the teamsters
that if he ever caught them on the plains again he would burn
their living bodies as well.

I'm convinced that he and Lot Smith were perfectly willing
to carry out those threats. I had an ancestor who rode with
them in '57.

Lot is an ancestral uncle of mine. I can believe that.

Hickman himself confessed to killing sereral people. We have a few "Hickmans" in our last ward. They're direct descendants and love to brag about the rough side of their pioneer heritage.

Quinn is right. He was a monster. Read "Brigham's Destroying Angel" (I think is the name.) Hickman was a terrifying individual who carried out blood atonements on several people. Not a book for weak stomachs.

I'm convinced that it went far beyond religious fanaticism
and dispensing salvation (hopefully) via spilled blood. I'm
willing to bet that "Elders" Porter Rockwell, Jack Redding,
and Bill Hickman would have shot their own mothers, for a
first full of coins and half a bottle of bad whiskey.

Brigham knew what scum they were, and didn't care a hoot.
Such assassins came in handy now and then, both in Nauvoo
and in Deseret.

That's what I think too. I didn't detect a lot of remorse from Hickman's book, but I haven't read it in more than ten years, so I could be wrong.
