Many ExMormons want to leave Utah. Where do you go? Nevada is an obvious choice. It is close by, so you won't lose all contact with Utah. Las Vegas is the biggest city there.

Las Vegas is very different from Utah. It has lots of alcohol, it has a sexually permissive atmosphere, and it has gambling. It has high quality night clubs that surpass anything you can find in Utah.

How about the people? That is a big wild card. Does Las Vegas attract the kind of people that ExMormons would want to hang around?

Don't know about Las Vegas but I prefer Colorado.

My favorite substitute for Utah is Park City.

High violent crime rate, too.

Don't get me wrong, I love to visit Las Vegas. But I'm not sure about living there.

I agree with DeAnn; Park City is great.

Las Vegas is recovering nicely from the great big housing bubble and construction frenzy from 2008. According to Bloomberg, Las Vegas is one of the top 20 cities whose housing prices are going up and recovering.

And I would like to see the stats that say Las Vegas has one of the highest crime rates in the country. DH and I haven't heard that and I've lived here since the early 70's and DH was born and raised here.

Vegas is a really nice place to live. Henderson is nice and so is Boulder City, where gambling is not legal. BTW, prostitution is not legal in Clark or Washoe counties where Las Vegas and Reno are. But it is legal in every other county.

I prefer Henderson or Summerland. Just avoid North Las Vegas and you should be fine. I'm kind of a hermet so I can't give you a general idea what the people are like. There is a high Mormon population though.

^^^ Summerlin, I used to live there. Lots and lots of Mormons, but there were a lot of nice people there too. Living in Vegas isn't like the movies, it's just city that had a lot of rich people and now has a lot of empty houses. Personally I loved Vegas but it was too damn hot in the Summer. It was nice having stores open passed 7 PM though.

I am taking a close look at Tucson. I need winter sunshine and warmth, and there aren't tons of mormons down there. There are also some democrats in that part of the state.

They also have a ski resort nearby. Has anyone ever skied at Mt. Lemon?

Any comments good or bad on Tucson?

I have also considered Bend Oregon.

It is a great place to visit. Especially if you are trying to "detox" from mormonism.

I have never lived there, so I can't say for sure. But, there is something to be said for separating excess from your everyday life. On the other hand, I would love to be able to see P&T anytime I feel like it.

Penn and Teller? I was having trouble deciphering what you were referring to--P & T all the time, baby.

I really like Reno. It has a really low cost of living, and due to the casinos there's lots to do there including some really good restaurants. It's 30 minutes from Tahoe. It's weather is more like Utah -- much less extreme than LV. And it has that Rocky Mountain West look and feel.

I've only once bumped into someone and had my modar go off. There are very few in Reno.

Be advised that Las Vegas has a pretty substantial LDS population.

South central & a lot of Eastern Wa are heavily Mo, but nothing like the IMW. Those places have a somewhat similar climate to UT/ID in case that's a consideration.

What you need to all do is come to the promised land of Florida. Seriously, we need help pushing our religious radicals out of office, and we are almost just there.

When I grew up in the 90s I worked construction in Henderson when it was a small town with dirt roads. Now it's a fairly NEW city, lacking the run-down buildings and neighborhoods you'll find in Las Vegas.

Take a little trip down Boulder Highway and you find yourself in the heart of Vegas hubbub...then you can head back to your relatively quiet and clean newer home in Henderson. Home prices are still relatively good, but are rising almost weekly.

The summers are hotter than hell. The heat will take your breath away some days (and not in a good way). But 8 months out of the year are perfect.
