Back in the Nauvoo days, people used to work on the temple one day out of ten as a tithe. If someone were to volunteer to work every other Saturday for eight hours as a custodian, that should pretty much cover their tithing payment, wouldn't it? The ward gets as many custodians as they need who are willing to work like that, and the Church pays for it 100%. The money doesn't leave the ward, and there's no need for any accounting. They are full-tithe payers. It seems to me that other callings could also work like this as well, such as an organist.
I don't see how Mormon high command could keep wards from doing this.
