Has anyone else seen this movie? It's about trying to get out of a cult and how impossible it is. It was one of the most unsettling movies I have ever seen. Most of the time, I feel like calling Mormonism a cult is a bridge too far, but the more I think about it, and the more I read about cult behavior, the more apropos it seems.

The movie also does a really great job of showing the type of person that is attracted to cults and how exclusivity and flattery are great tools for pulling and keeping someone in one.

No. It's about a woman who escapes from a cult and her difficulties adjusting to real life afterward.

Saw it. Liked it. Wasn't a big fan of the ending. But that seems to be the hardest part of making a great movie. All-in-all I thought it was worth watching, creepy and probably all too real.

Maybe you feel calling tscc a cult is a bit too far...but have you read about the history of the church at the time of js and by. They both preached blood atonement and some of the histories show that they ordered men put to death for disobeying priesthood authority, apostasy, and other things. Even castration was used as a punishment.

http://exmormon.org/d6/drupal/bloodatn

js and by took their authority seriously and people were scared to death of them and didn't dare remove themselves from tscc.

Who knows if tscc still isn't involved in some way in killing people(pure speculation, yes). You wouldn't even necessarily know it because with the sycophants the leaders have it wouldn't be advertised.

Much of what goes on with tscc is secret combinations, just as talked about in the Book of Mormon. The temple is about secret oaths and there used to be death penalties which some people viewed very seriously. Doesn't the temple covenants smack of secret combinations and cultic behavior?

Both "Martha Marcy May Marlene" and "Higher Ground" are available on Amazon Instant Video and free with Amazon Prime.

I got it on RedBox, but that was a few months ago-- I don't know how long they cycle their movies.
