I'm one of *those* who doesn't own a TV. I tend to stream movies.

I need Netflix suggestions, please. Here are my parameters:

1. Love documentaries

2. Hate romantic comedies

3. Hate comedies that aren't funny (I know)

4. Okay, no comedies or romantic business

5. Love stuff like "The Departed," "Hunger Games," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" trilogy (Svvvedish, natch), "Inception," "Metropolis," "Let the Right One In" (Svvvedish), Hitchcock -- a million times Hitchcock ... just mind-bendy freaky suspenseful stuff

6. NO VAMPIRES or pirates or Titanic schtuff

7. Zombies and ninjas are cool

Now that everyone here is allowed to watch R-rated movies (see what I did there?), help a sistah out?

I'm your huckleberry...

;-)

I saw a moderated lecture he gave 3 years ago, & he's so amazing. I wasn't able to meet him though because the line was way too long, & I had to use the restroom. lol

They haven't done anything impressive in the last couple of years, but in general their filmographies are excellent.

Memento--will bend your mind. Same family as Inception, but before Inception.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq9eM4ZXRgs

Be advised not to spoiler it, or Bing it. Just trust that if you like mind benders, it will bend your mind. It is one of this thrillers that the telling of the story is key to the story.

Great! I'll double down and share one of my known favorites

Fight Club

And unknown favorites

Sexy Beast

(Ghandi briiliantly plays a psychopath--it is vey much a romance, but not a comedy, and it is not a chick flick)

As far as documentaries go, one of my favourites is a BBC/Adam Curtis series called 'The Century of the Self'

Info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Century_of_the_Self

I'm not sure about Netflix - but YouTube has the whole four episodes:

Actually, this doc is about 'controlling the masses' in terms of corporations and society but the same themes could easily be applied to Mormonism and its adherents. (Helping to keep the thread on topic! ;-) But really, it's very applicable to 'the Morg.')

I was going to suggest "Tombstone", but judging by your last line, you have probably already seen it.

Also in the western theme, "3:10 to Yuma" was really good, as was the new version of "True Grit". The original versions are good, but don't move fast enough for modern audiences.

Love No Country for Old Men.

The diner scene when Tommy Lee Jones and the local sheriff talk about whether the world has changed or they have -- awesome dialogue. Very moving and real.

Yes, Tombstone is one of my favorites. Val Kilmer before he went nuts.

I like pretty much anything with Christian Bale.

"Lawless" is VERY good. I didn't recognize Guy Pearce.

I may have posted this already, but I love Edward scissorhands. I used to own that soundtrack and it was the only thing that could get me to sleep at night. I am listening to the donnie darko soundtrack right now and it's bringing up some serious memories.

Priest.

Not the stoopid vampire killer movie, but the little 1994 indie drama from England or Ireland or maybe someplace else. Explores all kinds of issues especially the difference between what an organized religion teaches is right vs what is "morally" right.

Great movie.

How do you feel about British crime dramas? The Brits are the best when it comes to that stuff, and Netflix has some good series. They run an hour and a half per episode. I recommend Wire in the Blood and Touching Evil. I've fallen in love with Robson Green.

:-P

I loved "Shaun of the Dead," Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," "Snatch," anything with Helen Mirren.

The English "House of Cards" is great.

(We'll forget about you going over the moon about Willz and Kate.)

I miss you, Debster.

Hey, I miss you too, girlfriend! Look, besides the dishy Robson Green, the shows I mentioned are really gritty and bloody and have a lot of disgusting serial killer torture deaths. How's that for "not romantic?"

Have you seen The Prestige? Christian Bale, baby!

The only problem with whodunits is if I figure out whodunit and then I get really annoyed and want two hours of my life back.

Great documentaries:

Just, Melvin: Just Evil
Capturing the Friedmans
Jupiter's Wife
Divorce, Iranian Style
Whole
Roger and Me
A Question of Miracles (HBO documentary about scam artist faith-healers like Benny Hinn)

If you like ninjas, try Kill Bill 1 & 2
also Shallow Grave (no ninjas, but a great black comic thriller with the yummy Ewan McGregor)
