It baffles me that no one knows their own church as little as active Mormons. Some TBMs are extremely devoted to Mormonism, yet know so damn little about it, while those who learn everything seem to be the ones who quit the religion. This has made me quip many times that one's ability to practice the religion is inversely proportionate to how much one knows.

So I thinks, let's make a test that will test a Mormon's knowledge of his or her own religion. Here are a few possible questions:

-- What year did Brigham Young introduce the Mormon Reformation? What role did the Reformation have in the Mountain Meadows Massacre?

-- What events led to the death of Parley P. Pratt? What role did Pratt's death have in the Mountain Meadows Massacre?

-- What year did the LDS church finally abandon polygamy? (Hint: not 1890.)

-- What year did Wilford Woodruff take Lydia Mountford as a polygamous wife?

Etc., etc., etc.

Got other good questions to add? I think this could be a great tool.

This is great. Maybe I should abandon my thread.

Richard - I LOVE your quizzes. It's funny too because I took all of them when I was first out of the church and didn't do so well. Then I took them again a year later and did quite well, lol.

I have actually been meaning to contact you about my idea below. I'd like to set something up like your quizzes except make them more interactive to give immediate feedback and reference information after each question is answered along with a running total score. I'll probably send an email your way in a couple of months requesting permission to use your quizzes as my primary source of questions.

I took the investigator level and did all right at 90% (I should have guessed that with his extensive expertise in egyptian, js would have an explanation for the name Mormon). I'll take the rest later, but I'm pretty sure the Translator level is out of my league.

It doesn't progress by difficulty as much as it indicates. Different quizzes do tend to hover around certain topics though - for example if you don't know a ton about Mark Hoffman you'll that particular quiz,

Cludgie - I would be VERY, VERY interested in collaborating with you on this.

I have reserved a domain name called mormonhistoryquiz.com.

I want to create a website that has multiple choice questions and gives immediate feedback after each question whether right or wrong with well referenced links backing up the answer and providing more details.

I have 2-3 other projects I'm working on right now that that precedence, but in a couple of months I anticipate this being my main focus.

Here's the type of question I am thinking of:

Name the young women that Joseph Smith married where he proposed to them and/or instigated sexual relationships with them while they were working as live in house-maids for Emma:

A) This never happened.
B) Helen Mar Kimball, Zina Huntington, Eliza R Snow
C) Hanna Mills, Olive Frost, Fanny Alger
D) Lucy Walker, Fanny Alger, Eliza Patridge

Answer D:

Smith never married Fannie, even illegally like most of his "brides", he just had sex with her.

And yet, that simple intercourse was so infused with priesthood power, that the sealing was thus accomplished! That's the miracle of it! :)

I think that'd be great! Let's have our people get with each other.

If I may suggest, sometimes on-line quizzes that test one's knowledge save all the answers until after you are done taking the test. Then it goes through each of the questions again, telling you if you got it right or wrong, and giving more details on the right answer.

If the quiz were set up like that, it could seem like a TBM-created quiz for TBMs to show off their knowledge of the church. It wouldn't be until after they take the whole quiz that they discover how little they know about church history AND get the full stories they never got before. The key thing is keeping any hints of "anti" material out of the questions.

For example:

Q 1. What was the name of Joseph Smith's wife?

Q 2. After the prophet was killed who took over leadership of the Church?

Q 3. Who was the last polygamous Prophet of the Church?

A 1. The answer will be complete list of all of his wives, their ages when they married him, and whether or not they had another living husband.

A 2. List the men who became the leaders of each major division that the early church split into.

A 3. Heber J. Grant, Served as Prophet 1918–1945, had three polygamous wives, although only one still lived when he became Prophet. (Most LDS will be surprised it was that recent.)

Having each startling answer come with a reference link to a source as church approved/sanctioned as you can find will help a lot in opening TBM minds.
Easier and easier to do as they realize they can't hide it all forever!

That's exactly how it should be done! I think if you designed it with that sort of format, much fewer people would accuse it of being anti.

Would love to see a "Jeopardy" format. Could be hilarious.

"What is ... 10, Alex."

I'm not sure this would be a good one, but I put it out:

How many times has Anne Frank been baptized into the Mormon church?

A: Never - Jewish Holocuast victims are never baptized into the church
B: Two
C: Nine
D: Who's Anne Frank?

Answer: C, the last time being just last year, IIRC.

I agree with mysid. TBM's may stop the quiz halfway through if they "sense" that it's anti-mo material. Let them think they're acing it until the end.

A little off topic, but is there a way I can take the quizzes on an iPad? If it requires flash player are iPad users totally screwed or is there a way around it?

There should be a "God Level" for the hardest questions, and whoever answers those becomes a God
