My TBM family recently went on a vacation together and my little brother was caught looking at bikini-clad women on his iPhone. My step-father noticed, yelled (publicly), and threw the phone into the nearest garbage can - where it stayed.

Later, my mother remarked that she'd rather catch my 15 year old brother smoking crack cocaine.

Is there ANY way to get through to these people? My brother isn't addicted to "porn," and I don't want him turned into some sexually dysfunctional guilt ridden zombie.

And these are probably the same people who will want him interested enough in women, sexually, to make them a grandchild someday.

When those eggs hatch, your brother will leave the church and ruin your mother's chances at having an eternal family.

To answer your question: no, there is no getting through that level of crazy. Just tell your brother that chicks are hot, naked chicks are hotter, and your mother is crazy cakes.

I've never done any drugs, but I have watched real porn & my older sister is a crack addict, & I can tell you that there is absolutely no comparison between the two. Whoever thinks that porn is worse than crack, or that even bikini photos are worse than crack are living in a sick & twisted fantasy world.

By clueing him in on discretion, you give him an opportunity in his own mind to see the idiocy of the grownups and also to feel less shame. All in one comment. Discretion automatically implies that everybody does it and it's no big deal.

The big thing with porn "addiction" is the level of shame that was felt prior, as well as the restricted access to what is desired. The longer the unsatiated desire goes on, the more likely the value will increase to the point where it becomes an obsession. The first step is to get in his corner.

When I was a teen, if I wanted things like that (and there were no cellphones back then), I would have had to pay for it. And I would be furious to have had to babysit for 200 hours (you only got $1 an hour back in the day) to save up to buy that phone only to have my dad chuck it in the trash. I'd go home and find something HE paid $200 for and chuck IT in the trash. That's just not cool. If the parents paid for the phone, still. Why not just take out 2 $100 bills and light them on fire?

I'm more incensed and outraged by the waste than anything else. What example does that set for the children -- that their things aren't worth anything? Are they worth anything?

When my family and I first moved to Utah, I attended one of the porn addiction classes the church hosts... It is crazy.. every week 30-40 people at each class, in each town throughout the valley.

Lately I've had this urge to start attending each one and when it gets to my turn, state: "The best thing that helped me overcome my addiction to porn was getting out of the LDS church." Amen.... leave.

My super-TBM husband looks at women in bikinis online frequently. We don't consider that porn. I could care less. He's a MAN. Men like to look at sexy women. I actually wouldn't care if my husband did look at porn. What sort of problem do those people have? Their son sounds normal to me.
