Who worry so much about setting a good example, who obsess about being "Mothers Who Know", who see nothing wrong about belonging to a religion that actually receives revelation about piercings and tattoos, for people who care and worry so much about what other people think about them....

HOW can they be so absolutely clueless about what people really think about them? Can anyone answer that?

Narcissists care a great deal about what people think, until someone criticizes them. They then dismiss that person as non-relevant.

It stems from having self-doubts that you can't actually acknowledge you have--not to yourself or to others.

They consider it persecution--

Because obsessing about image is a quick way of looking foolish.

I just watched and also listened to Pride and Prjudice and Mr. Collins comes to mind. This character preplans his conversations and the compliments he doles out for a price. And he constantly brags about his image, his questionable insight, and the good example he sets, all of this while everyone snickers and winks at his foolishness.
