Do mormons not believe in mental disabilities or think they can just be "gotten over?"
When I was growing up, depression was caused by Satan, I heard. What about other mental illnesses?

I ask because my family is having a family reunion (most are tbm) and my sister, who has PTSD, is bringing her service dog to the cabin. He is very well-trained. She's had plans to go to the reunion all year, and has been saving what little money she can. I am not going, because I don't have the money... but today she was told she can not bring her service dog, and if she brings him, he has to stay out side... She even has to eat outside with him. Five days she is told this before the reunion!

They say it's because the contract says "no pets" but even she explained to them that a service dog is not a pet and they have to allow him by law. They still refuse to let her take him, and say if she takes him there will be a "confrontation."

They don't believe she has PTSD, and does not need a service dog.. They say that some people do not want to be around a dog on their vaction.

Do mormons usually not believe in mental disorders (caused by Satan?) Or is my family acting like A-holes?

Well, I have been in probably a couple of dozen priesthood lessons where they insisted that mental illness was due to "sin," and that one could get over it using prayer and reading the scriptures. And paying tithing, too, probably. As far as mental disabilities, they still believe that these disabilities are "given" to us to teach us how much God loves us by giving us challenges. (If the afflicted are NOT Mormon, God gave them the afflictions because, well... they were not Mormon.)

You're right, of course, that the facility has to, by law, let the service animal in. If they don't believe in PTSD, what can be said? Yes, sometimes there are assholes in one's own family.

My tbm siblings doesnt think that I really have clinically diagnosed PTSD, major depressive disorder, or high functioning autism...for which I receive disability for. They think its all from not beleiving, and being mothered to much as a child (which I wasnt) I dont have a relationship with them.

A friend was telling me about her husband's chronic pain/migraines and how his parents don't believe it. They think he just needs to be more faithful and they'll go away.

The silly idea that faith and prayer can cure a person naturally leads to thinking that if they still have a disorder, it must be caused by lack of faith. It's not just Mormons who do this, of course. Just World Theory is believed by most religions. They think everything has a reason. God is either punishing you or rewarding you. Actually, everything doesn't happen for a reason, most things are random. We can make choices, but unfortunately health problems mental or physical are usually no one's fault.

Bruce R. McConkie equated psychology with witchcraft. 'Nuff said?

Back in my first ward the custodian couple were mentally challenged. It was a common comment that they must've been extra special and didn't need to be here at all but are to teach lessons to other people. They won't be judged because of their disability.

ness - both! Your family are acting like assholes and Mos believe that if you pray hard enough and pay enough tithing, you will not have any mental illnesses, just like everything else with them. Any problem can be fixed by paying a ton of tithing. GADS !!

Ness, That's a terrible thing for them to do and the lack of empathy for her is disgusting. If they don't want her dog in the cabin they should fork out the money for a motor home for her to stay in (unless she can get her own cabin and perhaps share it with someone in the family that doesn't mind the dog). Is there any way she can get her money back and just not go? I feel bad for her.

It's sad that people in this religion still believe in superstitions over science, and even more so that the church leaders would probably not agree with them about this situation. I would tell her to bring it up to the bishop and ask his opinion on it, and even see if he can contact their bishop so he can give a compassionate talk about it.

Well, I have tried to call my dad and ask why he is threating his own daughter and I don't think it's really about the dog... but he won't talk to me. I think he knows he's being an ass hole.

My sister demanded a refund for her money and said she's disappointed in the way they are treating her. I told her to go any way and to bring a camcorder and if they act like they are, she can at least tell them she's going to post it on her guide dog web site.

I guess they are trying to claim it's not about her PTSD, it's about the dog, and even if it was a seeing-eye dog, they would not allow the dog inside. Wow, so if you are blind in my family, you would have to eat outside with your dog. They are totally lying, no one can be that ignorant. My family are idiots.
