So, I live in a city that is roughly 95% LDS, but only about 45% live under the poverty line. The school district participates in the summer feeding program where they serve free lunches to children 1-18 5 days a week over the summer. The intended purpose is to provide safe and healthy food for children whose families can't afford it otherwise.
My vent is that it seems that most of the people who are getting lunch for their kids are doing it because they think it would be fun to get free food and "picnic." The kids end up throwing most of the food away anyhow because they don't like it. I don't know if this is part of the Mormon entitlement, "oh, it's free food!" or if perhaps maybe they can't actually afford to feed their kids despite their incomes, or... either way, the whole "hey, this'll be fun, and it's free, so go do it even if you don't need it!" approach bothers me.
