1.Unassuming or moderate in the estimation of one's abilities or achievements. 2.(of an amount, rate, or level of something) Relatively moderate, limited, or small.
That sounds very different from the modesty that Mormons always talk about. They seem to equate "modest" with how much skin a woman is showing. Its just like that part in The Princess Bride: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
Thoughts?

Definition of MODEST/ Webster 1 a : placing a moderate estimate on one's abilities or worth b : neither bold nor self-assertive : tending toward diffidence 2 : arising from or characteristic of a modest nature 3 : observing the proprieties of dress and behavior : decent 4 a : limited in size, amount, or scope <a family of modest means> b : unpretentious <a modest home> — mod·est·ly adverb
Note number 3. But I well agree with you, being modest is a matter of personal taste and choice, and those of the morg do use it to pass judgement on others especially girls and women. Is that what is really bothering you?
For Mormons the concept means covered shoulders and collar bones.
For Muslims it would be covered hair, arms, and ankles. I tried on the garb required for women in Yeman which meant seeing through black cheese cloth since the head and face are draped for modesty sake.
Also, the word "reverence" which Mormons have re-defined to mean "be quiet, bow your head and say yes. Oh, and dress modestly while you do it."
Totally agree with the fact that not only have they corrupted the word "modesty" but they are some of the least modest people I know. I'd rather see a bare shoulder than a snotty, self-righteous attitude any day.
