All through my youth I was around LDS including family members and close friends. By the time I was middle aged I decided to join the church. It didn't last and probably because I was too old to believe such hookum. That and the fact they were trying to tell my husband (non LDS) and I about sex- which was a joke, coming from two 20 year old missionaries. In one of their classes, another prospective member had four family members with them and they were very confrontational about the temple rites. They felt that if the church was promoting family, then they should allow family to go into the temple with the member and if not, what did they have to hide?
The whole thing was so constrictive and controlling that I just quit going and never looked back. I think there are a lot of nice and really good people in the church, but that said, I can see where it had its negative affects on my friends and family members and I am glad I stepped away from it.
