Exminion, I'm handling the trolls like I do annoying TV commercials - I don't watch TV at all. Period. I'd rather read a book or do something outside than have to sit through all that drivel. People say to just skip over the arguments and p

I've been following RfM for probably close to 20 years now. I don't post often, but for me RfM has been an incredible source of information on Mormonism, especially details on doctrine and history where the official mormon position is "I don't know that we teach that." (Yes, you do, and here are 20 references from official LDS publications that show that you do.) I think everyone i

On the other hand, when nonmormons are undergoing suffering it is because of their wickedness and desire to sin. God is making them suffer the consequences of their poor decisions. If only they'd accept "The Church," joy will surely come into their lives!!!!!!! There's always an explanation ... Perhaps life is simply difficult, and all of us are going to suffer to one degree or an

I've always wondered where the H came from. I graduated in the life sciences so I've always appreciated geneticists' take on the matter: Humans have two sets of chromosomes, one from the mother and one from the father. Organisms with two sets of chromosomes are said to be diploid. Jesus only had one human parent and thus only one set of chromosomes, making him haploid. (This does not tak

I had my DNA tested at three different sites (Ancestry, Family Tree, and 23 and Me). I was HOPING I'd find something that indicated my family tree needed to be redone. But nope. All three sites gave the same results. And all results confirmed the genealogy that my Mormon relatives have done. I'm sure a woman could have committed adultery with her husband's brother somewhere along the line.

My biggest ah-ha moment was reading a book about smallpox in the American colonies. Native Americans had never been exposed to smallpox before and were highly susceptible. It quickly decimated their population. The book talked about Europeans finding abandoned Native American villages, and their encounters with the natives who survived. The survivors had lost everything - family, friends, c

>"a plant-based alternative to meat is subverting God’s Master Plan to have us eat His other creations." Aren't plants god's creations too? Or were plants created by Satan? Last I heard god created the heavens and the earth. Or is that something else that is no longer taught? I have a very hard time keeping up with god's eternal, unchanging truths.

We were sitting behind a young family in sacrament meeting one time. The mother was a convert and her nonmember sister had been babysitting the kids at times. The three year old was standing on the pew. She dropped the toy she was holding, looked down at it, and said VERY loudly, "Ah shit!!!" The mother was horribly embarrassed, and our entire family couldn't stop laughing. My Da

If people ask if I'm a practicing homosexual I tell them, "Every chance I get!" (How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice!) We are told that suffering makes us become stronger, happier people. I've been "suffering" from same-sex attraction my whole life, and life just keeps getting better and better! I'm very grateful I'm no longer having to endure M

A few weeks ago there was a story on the Salt Lake Fox 13 newscast about some kids that found a plastic case with a loaded gun in the middle of the street. (The story was about how they did the right thing and went to an adult.) One of the boys they interviewed was named Tungsten. I've lived in Utah for years and am used to the weird names and spellings. But this one hit me like a bolt out

I agree with everything Anon wrote. I did EVERYTHING a good Mormon was supposed to do (except get married in the temple, thank God). No matter what I did or how hard I prayed nothing ever changed. I worked as hard as I could for a decade not to be gay. The only thing that changed was how much more I hated myself for being a failure. After a couple of suicide attempts I finally reached the

Yes, it's easier to leave Mormonism now than it was in the past. A lot of us went through pure hell before we made it to the place we are today. There's a somewhat similar conversation going on among the older members of the gay community. Gay kids today don't realize how bad things were for gay people in the past, and how much some gay people suffered just for being gay. Or in other words,

I was at the Utah gay pride festival in Salt Lake City yesterday. I was very surprised to see Ancestry.com marching in the parade. There were several dozen people marching, all wearing matching, custom pride t-shirts. And they were handing out stickers of their corporate logo done in the gay pride rainbow. I thought Ancestry.com was a Mormon-owned, church affiliated company in Utah Valley wit

You've received a lot of good advice. I have something to add. You worry about disappointing your parents, family, and friends. Everyone worries about disappointing the people who love us. But don't let that worry become more important than living your own life. I spent so many years trying to live the life that was expected of me, of trying to make my parents proud. I was an Eagle Scout,

I appreciate all the privacy concerns and agree that's a good reason to not have it done. That being said, I had my DNA tested by Family Tree DNA, 23 and Me, and Ancestry. I wasn't aware National Geographic was doing testing, and I might consider going to them as well. I had all the testing done because I'm interested in family history. It's a bit ironic. The rest of my family is Mormon

I'm gay and I graduated from college. I think a "gay graduation" ceremony is a stupid idea. I'm gay, but that isn't the one single issue that defines me as a person. I have all sorts of opinions, interests, etc. None of them define me as a person, including being gay. As a lot of others have said before, I think being gay is one of the least interesting things about me. I can se

Another change to the temple ceremony was the removal of the Oath of Vengeance in the early 1930s. From Wikipedia: "The oath of vengeance was an addition made to the Nauvoo endowment under the direction of Brigham Young by 1845 in the Nauvoo Temple, soon after the 1844 death of Joseph Smith.[2] Participants agreed to be bound by the following oath: You and each of you do covena

Thanks for the references. This is one of the reasons I love RfM! Not only do you get all the correct information on this site, you get it with footnotes to official Mormon sources!

I probably should sign out before I post this, but oh well. I already know I'm going to hell. There's a gay Mormon missionary porn website that I can't remember the name of off the top of my head. But I've watched a few videos and definitely saw markings on the garments (before they were removed ...) I wondered how they were able to get the real thing. On this website at least all the m

Thanks, Richard. Do you have links to or references for the 1834 Cowdery and Smith church history, or to the Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball's quotes? I'd love to be able to quote the original sources when sharing this bit of church history! It's so much fun using official and approved church sources when teaching people church history that they consider to be "anti-Mormon."

An adult human body contains 9 to 12 pints of blood. 0.3% of that is certainly much more than "even a drop of negro blood." No priesthood for you!

My Great Great Grandfather James Crane was part of the Mormon labor that helped build the Transcontinental Railroad. In his history he mentions helping build the railroad through Weber Canyon. He never says a word about being paid for his labor.

Honestly, my life didn't have any real meaning until I left the cult. As a Mormon I was told what to believe, what not to believe, what my opinion on different issues should be, what the blueprint for my life should be, etc., etc. After Mormonism I decided all of those things for myself. Any beliefs or opinions I have are those I've determined for myself. Whatever I do with my life is based

Shinehah is right, it's so easy to be a rebel in Utah. When I want to really piss people off in Utah I mow the front lawn shirtless on Sunday with a beer in one hand. To get the same reaction anywhere else I'd have to get face tattoos and sell heroin to elementary school kids. What makes it even more fun is how passive-aggressive Utah Mormons are. They won't come out and tell you how they f

Please be patient with yourself, your husband, and your kids as you exit. For me, leaving the church was obvious. I'm gay and hated myself based on what the church said about people like me. Long story short I decided I either had to get more serious with the suicide attempts or leave mormonism behind. Best decision I ever made. The hardest part for me was the huge void in my life that use

Mormons talk about people "suffering" from same-sex attraction (SSA). I turn it around and talk about people suffering from Mormonism. I'm gay, and if I'm "suffering" from same-sex attraction I must be one hell of a masochist! I've never been happier. I stopped suffering when I rejected Mormonism, came out as gay, and started living my life honestly and openly.

A couple of summers ago the missionaries approached my husband in our front yard. My husband told them that we're gay and not interested. The missionary told him that the church has a much more accepting attitude toward gay people now. My husband said, "Oh really? Well we act on it." The missionary got really upset and asked, "How do you know about that?!" Duh! We live
