Thank you! It sounds like it wouldn't be unusual for an aunt to attend this, and I don't want to cause any bad feelings. He's actually having a family birthday party afterward, which I was planning to attend. So I'll just go a little early and attend the church ceremony as well. Hopefully I won't have to pretend that I think it's awesome. :) Thanks guys.

Hi everyone, I am looking for some quick advice about a family event this afternoon. My two sisters and I grew up going to the LDS church, but only my one sister is still active (I have resigned and the other sister stopped participating more than 10 years ago). My little nephew just turned 12, and he is receiving the priesthood today. Sorry if I have misworded that, but this is something I do

My TBM family does this as well. My aunt (who is in her 70s), recently fell down the stairs in her house and broke her ankle. She's doing great now, but in the first week or so she kept saying she had been talking to her dad a lot. Her dad died about 40 years ago. They don't normally talk about speaking with dead relatives, just when someone is sick or going through something especially hard.

My first coffee house drink was a black and white mocha, which is a latte (espresso and steamed milk) flavored with both regular and white chocolate. It was absolutely delicious and didn't have a strong coffee flavor at all. I actually asked the barista what they would recommend for someone new to coffee, and that's what he gave me. Those sort of drinks are great for introducing yourself to coffe

Personally, all the Mormons I know who are active in their church wouldn't drink alcohol or coffee just to be polite. It's hammered into them so hard from childhood, they just wouldn't do it. They're basically afraid of it. Think of how many people come on here excited to talk about their first drink.

That is just plain bizarre. I work at a university library and I can't imagine anyone under any circumstances talking about a book like that. Even if it was something satanic, we'd be inviting people to come take a look at the neat old book!

My parents weren't active LDS, so we didn't do this when we went on family vacations. However, I still experienced this elsewhere. When I was a junior in high school I went to San Francisco on a choir trip. There were about 130 kids in this choir, and we were almost all LDS. As part of the trip we actually went to a ward in San Francisco, attended sacrament meeting, and performed a musical num

I thought that was always the rule. When I was a teenager and the missionaries used to drop by occasionally, I always said no one else was home so they would go away. They never came in the house if I said that, but it did lead to an extremely awkward conversation in the doorway about my non-Mormon mother, which she overheard from the next room. That was one of the big moments that led to me leav

I loved YW camp when I was goody goody little beehive, but then I slowly started to figure out how weird it was, especially thecrying testimony meeting the last night. Yuck! The worst was the year we went on a pioneer trek. I cringe when I hear about friends who are now going as a "Ma and Pa." I just think, you better give those kids enough food and water!

"Pointing at the roots of Mormon extremism, Cannon tells how apostle John Henry Smith issued a warning to LDS members that sexual intercourse for any purpose other than bearing children is the same as adultery according to the Lord." Jeez. That reminds me of one of my best friends growing up. Her family was Mormon, although she wasn't particularly interested in it. Her mother wouldn'

I work at the Marriott Library at the University of Utah, so that's the first thing I think of. The dance building on the U campus is also named after the Marriotts.

All this story does is make Mormon men look like assholes who think every non-Mormon woman is out to fuck them.

Last night I was driving into downtown Salt Lake to meet some friends, and I had a nice view of the glowing temple. It got me thinking about how sometimes it really would be nice to still believe. Mostly I think how comforting it would be to believe there is a God with a perfect plan just for me, and to believe that even when someone dies I'll be able to see them again. I think that is a major fu

Lots of men remarry quickly after the death of a wife, that is understandable. But I still think it's weird that he married his wife's niece. Mostly because the idea of marrying one of my uncles, or my husband marrying one of my own nieces if I died, completely creeps me out. He sounds like a great guy, but I agree that the niece part is weird, even if she wasn't a blood relation.

When I was maybe 12 or 13 and a holy little Beehive, I started paying tithing on the money my dad gave me for mowing the lawn. I gave more than 10% because I felt bad I hadn't been paying tithing up until that point. I went to tithing settlement at the end of the year (alone, my parents weren't LDS), and the bishop asked if I had really earned enough money that year to be paying that much tithing

I was so clueless about other religions growing up that I didn't even realize many of the hymns in the Mormon hymnal aren't unique to Mormonism. My mom (never mo) took me to a Christmas concert at a Lutheran church when I was about 10, and before it started I looked through one of their hymnals. I was surprised to see a lot of hymns I knew. Poor, clueless Brigham City girl. My favorites were H

I really don't know anything about Doug Wright, other than he works for KSL/Deseret News and is Mormon. But it seems he isn't as brainwashed as most. I read an article by him in the Deseret News last week about the MPAA movie ratings system. He basically said that it's silly to reject all R-rated movies based solely on the ratings system. There were a lot of unhappy comments on that article basic

I used to play the piano in seminary a lot (it was one of the few ways I was willing to participate), and I picked If You Could Hie to Kolob all the time just because I liked playing it.

I don't listen to conference, but I do live in Salt Lake and read the Salt Lake Tribune. So yes, it affects me even if I don't want it to. I needed to go to the U yesterday and forgot I needed to use a different route. I spent about 20 minutes on North Temple trying to get through the mass of people. Then I looked on the Tribune's website like I always do, and was greeted with the infuriating hea

My high school choir sang at the Conference Center once; that would have been about 10 years ago. It was a huge concert with a bunch of Utah schools and some international choirs. We also sang at the tabernacle on Temple Square a few times. Honestly I think the same question could be asked of a lot of sports stadiums.

Apparently I still give off a Mormon vibe. I was talking about academic librarian opportunities in Utah with a co-worker today, and she mentioned BYU and said she didn't want to intrude but thought I was LDS. I told her nope, but I was raised in it. It was a very polite conversation that I didn't mind at all, but it does seem that I still look like a Mormon. Of course, a TBM would spot my three p

That happened to me, too. After my husband and I moved last year, we got a visit from a home teacher in that area's ward. He was really confused when we said we weren't LDS, and said "someone who really loved us" had called to check on us and make sure the ward knew about us. Our response? We sent in our resignation letters the next day and let our family know about it.

I thought you had to go through the temple to be sealed to your children. That's the threat I always heard... "you won't be with your family in the eternities unless you get married in the temple."

You said you "want to find one who will help me but not charge me." That's why I replied the way I did. I know what you mean about the extra tests. I spent about $300 on unnecessary tests for my dog last year, because they made it sound like they were absolutely necessary for the next step in treatment. Turns out she was still in the normal time range for the sickness she had, and thing

I'm really sorry to hear about your dog, but I've never heard of a vet that won't charge you for a visit. It's how they make their living after all. I take my dog to the Avenues Pet Clinic and they're great, but that's in downtown Salt Lake. You could maybe try calling the Humane Society of Utah and see what they recommend you do. (801) 261-2919

Have they said what stores will be in the City Creek mall? The Gateway doesn't have large, anchor department stores (like Dillards, Nordstroms, JC Penney, etc.), so if the City Creek mall has a couple of those they should do OK. Same goes for Trolley Square... it's mostly small boutiques and restaurants. I'm just ready to have a downtown again.
