This list covers what happened to many of JS's wives after his death. You have to follow the link for each wife to find out what happend to them, though. At least 6 married Heber C. Kimball. Many of the polyandrously married wives stayed with their first husbands. Some married Brigham Young. At least 2 died shortly after Joseph. Some state nothing, so presumably, no information could be fou

The big 4, Jacobsen, Okland, Big-D and Layton have all done work for the LDS church as its General Contractor. It always comes up in conversation when they are talking about large projects they have worked on in the past. These groups just happen to be the largest construction companies around, so they qualify for those huge projects the church has undertaken recently. Those big 4, however,

I don't have many objections to what the NT tells us Jesus taught. What I have a problem with is Biblical literalism, particularly when believers try to enshrine those beliefs into law.

there are quite a few breweries around and the beers are served in a variety of venues or can be purchased at the grocery store/liquor store/convenience store. Epic Brewery, Bohemian, Uinta, Squatters, Red Rocks all spring to mind immediately. Bohemian, Squatters and Red Rocks all have brew pubs. I also love The Beerhive, as it has a ton of beers available and it's downtown on Main Street.

should put positive signs in their shop fronts. I.e., "We Serve Everyone." If I were a business owner, I would make it clear that I am not on the side of the goons pushing this kind of prejudicial treatment.

He's on a fucking political hunger strike. Period. But that doesn't sound quite so sympathetic as "fasting", does it?

Exmodad, you need to stop concern trolling. It's as phony as a 3 dollar bill and makes you look like a total dick. Also, telling someone to calm down in the way you did to blue orchid is a dick move. And I'm fairly certain you know that.

I love your response, HYT. Your father is a Pharisee. Were it me, though, I think I would have been far more offended by his public shaming of you. The caffeine issue is just the vehicle. His need to control you through embarrassing you is a much bigger issue.

This shocks me. I lived in Alpine from 1978 until 1986. I can't believe this is the same place. Glad to hear it, don't get me wrong, but shocked!

The use of the word "gentile" to mean non-Mormons, for one. Traditionally, gentiles refers to non-Jews. ;)

then you've misunderstood. Or perhaps missed my first post? I am an atheist. I study religion because it fascinates. I am not searching for a spiritual home. I agree the world is an amazing and awe-inspiring place. Hell, the whole universe is amazing and awe-inspiring. I find solace in science and fact. However, I very much appreciate art. And that is where religion lies. Mytho

I would start with the book "The Power of Myth". The book is a transcript of an interview between Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell. In other words, you can read the book or even watch the series. http://www.amazon.com/The-Power-Myth-Joseph-Campbell/dp/0385418868/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386700714&sr=8-1&keywords=power+of+myth Personally, I did not start my studies wi

I'm pretty firmly on the atheist/agnostic side of the debate, but I am still mad about studying religion. I just find it endlessly fascinating. My academic background is in languages, literature and history, though, so it's been easy for me to put it at arm's length and treat it like any other subject. This is what I found to be freeing. Once I made that mental switch, I found the Bible t

The problem they've got with in stating the LDS Church was simply a product of it's time in a racist America is that it isn't true. Abolition was very much a religious movement. Yes, it did include secular groups as well, but at it's heart, it was religious. It also began in the late 18th century, shortly after the Revolution. It is a pathetic apologetic. The fact that they haven't man

about Mormons not being lazy. I especially agree with every word in anagrammy's post in the previous thread. I also understand that there are many, MANY reasons that Mormons opt for the child-like (childish?) life. I do. The reasons many Mormons make those choices could fill up multiple threads. And I don't see them as excuses, but rather as valid reasons. However, regardless of how val

Are you a journalist? Or are you just talking about making comments on the Trib's articles? In other words, this is not in any way about freedom of the press as you are not, in fact, a member of said press. More than likely it's about understaffed and underpaid forum mods who don't want to deal with the complaints you generate. Are you following the forum rules? As an individual, you

Mormons do love to call others lazy. As if living every single, solitary day of your life by someone else's dictated rules requires an ounce of thought or energy! Lazy investigators won't do the work! Lazy apostates couldn't hack it! It's all just another means of calling out the "otherness" of the rest of the world.

About ten years ago, I had a very similar conversation with a then-TBM friend. He simply could not get his head around the fact that, not only did I not live that way anymore, I did not WANT to live that way ever again! He loved it. Then. Things have changed radically for him recently and he finds himself on my side of the divide and is finally beginning to understand what I've been saying

29. Sure!
I think we need more reasons to celebrate, cut loose, relax and reconnect with what we deem important. For me, that's family, friends and food. Find something you like about the season and celebrate it. Make up your own traditions! Do as much or as little as you feel and just have a genuinely wonderful time. Good Yule, Y'all!

Your reaction is completely appropriate AND understandable. Given your background, of course, but I think more importantly because you are viewing art. Its purpose is to make you feel something. Make you think. Maybe even make you a little uncomfortable. You did great. :)
