You don't seem to have understood what I was trying to say (perhaps inadequately): Icelandic culture was dominated by Christianity (yes - that un-Norse Jewish thing) for 1000 years, and there was no real cultural continuity of the old Thor beliefs. So what does “their own Nordic culture” mean and what is it based on? Blue eyes, light skin, other special genes?

I can't believe what I just read. “Ásatrúarfélagið” is supposed to be a “real” religion in contrast to the joke religion of the “Pastafarians”? Do you actually assume that significant groups of Icelanders really believe in this Hollywood nonsense? So it's "the second largest religion in Iceland", but perhaps it's worth noting that only 5,000 people profess it (which d

It certainly isn't that simple. The first Indo-Europeans were definitely steppe dwellers but had a completely polytheistic view of Godhead which was later on expressed in the Indian, Greek and Roman heavens.

I'm always surprised at how gay the representatives of homophobic organizations often appear, whether it's the Catholic Church or, in this case, Mr. Anderson. https://media2.ldscdn.org/assets/area-training/msr-training/2022-12-0010-finding-lost-members-training-utah-area-1080p-eng.mp4?lang=undefined

Jehovah's Witnesses deserve great respect for their attitude during the Nazi era. Of the 35,000 JWs living in Germany at the time, 400 were executed and a further 1,100 died in concentration camps and prisons. In 1936 and 1937, JWs distributed 100,000 leaflets denouncing the oppression of their religious community. This is referred to by some researchers as the largest resistance action in Naz

I would like to draw attention to the article "Inside the Mountain Meadows Massacre" by Brian Dunning (https://skeptoid.com/episodes/4768). It's generally quite informative but there are some caveats in my opinion. To give two examples: It's a little bit too simple to just say that Joseph and Hyrum Smith had been lynched. And there could be a misunderstanding of Parley Pratt's murder in

I could not stand listening for more than 5 minutes. This Ex-Mormon makes the Mormon church sound like a progressive force. And I am a very conservative person myself (though secular).

I'm diagnosed with Asperger's, too. Being in my mid-sixties, I can tell you that it is possible to learn to adapt to normal behaviour (and no, I'm not politically correct and I'm not putting it in quotation marks). It's like learning another language - it will never be your native language but you can become fluent in it. So you can learn to look into people's eyes although it will never stop to

That wasn't my point and it wasn't part of the article that you mentioned. So again: why is the article mentioned by you a proof of American Exceptionalism? And by "American" you mean what? As to the points supplied later in your response: they aren't solid either. Just a few remarks: some pre-existing conditions in the USA (that's what you mean by "American", I suppose) ma

Why is this an example of American Exceptionalism? The article even says explicitly "As alarming as some of those deficits in science knowledge might appear, Americans fared better on several of the questions than similar, but older surveys of their Chinese and European counterparts.". Just my 2 cents from abroad.

A surprising number of family members wore clothes I would consider to be inappropriate for a funeral: colorful shirts, no jackets, no ties, even at least one hoodie. Did the folks wearing that stuff want to tell us something or am I overthinking this?

A Nazi? I suppose you are talking about Uchtdorf. Do you have any documents supporting this accusation? Or is he a Nazi just because he was born in Germany? Which would confirm my impression that some of this board's self-styled fighters against tyranny are nothing but wannabe tyrants themselves.

I'm a nevermo, so I'm not influenced by any feelings of familiarity or holiness. On the other hand, all I know is the German translation. Although I'm not religious and wasn't raised in a religious family, I like the bible a lot as a work of fiction and as a fundamental work of our culture. The BoM, however, seems booooring to me - and ridiculous, too. I didn't manage to read more than 10 % of

Just visited the home page of the Germany Frankfurt mission. So I learned (among other things) that 34% Catholics and 34% Protestants means that "about half of Germany’s population identifies itself as Christian". The climate is "tropical". As to meat, "chicken is pretty expensive so you don’t see that as much". Major cities are "Mainz, Frankfurt am Main, He

Just read what Wikipedia had to say about Boyd K. Packer. To me, most interesting was the list of alternative languages: Deutsch Español Français Português Simple English (?) Suomi Svenska And that's it. Much shorter than e.g. that with Luis Ladaria Ferrer, secretary of the catholic Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - and not even a cardinal.

Garett Hansen (GMoney88): I don’t support the rewriting of history. Nor those who believe it’s acceptable to do so. I don’t support the decision to avoid talking about certain parts of church history because it is not faith promoting. I can’t put into words the pain I felt when I realized the church had, for decades, pretended that there was nothing incriminating in its past. And then
