http://www.rechelleunplugged.com/ Rechelle got a bit of notoriety early last year because of her apology for being a Christian shithead. She's a funny writer and has an ongoing parody of Pioneer Woman. http://www.colourlovers.com/ This is an interactive site that I'm completely addicted to. You can create palettes and apply those palettes to patterns and get feedback. http://jesuskirkand

Today, like yesterday, was bright, sunny and fucking cold. Better bright and sunny and fucking cold than the SNOWPOCALYPSE that we had Tuesday.

I don't think I was really near death, but in 2003 I had some sort of episode where I couldn't breathe for several minutes. I was conscious the whole time and the only thing I could think was that Mr. BestBBQ didn't know where I was and I was going to die surrounded by strangers. I wrote about it here the next day and Fly, who used to be a regular, consulted with Dr. Fly who thought I might have

Please stay away from Starbucks. They over roast their coffee, but they've managed to convince a large segment of the American public that burnt = superior. It's bunk. Instead, go to a locally-owned coffee shop during their down time (probably midafternoon) and explain that you're new to coffee and aren't sure where to begin. A good barista will listen and will try to get you off on the right

My parents are actually good, decent, ethical people who have accomplished a great deal and they raised me to be a good, decent, ethical person. I respect them tremendously. But I don't really love them. They never made any effort to know me even though I wanted them to. I don't think they *really* love me or my siblings. They feel an obligation to us because they had us, but that's where it

My sister was a grandmother at 42. She got married at 19 and had her first of two kids at 20. The oldest got married at 21 and was a father at 22. No Mormons in the scenario, just Methodists. Oh, and we're all staunch Midwesterners. Getting married young was the thing to do when my sister got married (1972) so I don't think young grandmotherhood (new word!) is uncommon for people my sister'

I can't begin to count how many books I have and 97% are non-fiction, so this'll be difficult. In no particular order: The Big Year - Mark Obmascik (soon to be a major motion picture) A Walk in the Woods - Bill Bryson Tiny Houses - Lester Walker I really don't have favorites, though.

More footage of the Toowoomba flooding. It doesn't look so bad at first, but ho-ly cow, does it ever get bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYUpkPTcqPY

I was born and raised Methodist and one thing you should keep in mind is that congregations can vary wildly. I can't emphasize that enough. If you go to one and it's too conservative then chances are there's a another congregation across town that's completely different. The overall organization is fairly liberal by today's standards but used to be far more liberal in the '60's and '70's when

Not exercising is what landed my 82-year old mom in a nursing home earlier this year. She wasn't getting up and moving, got weak and fell a couple of times. In the nursing home they made her exercise and she got strong enough to go home after five months. She hated the nursing home and is now willing to do anything - including exercise - in order to not go back. She has specific therapy she h

Advent is the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Each Sunday a candle (purple) is lit in an Advent wreath. On Christmas day the center candle (always white) is lit. It's just a way to mark the weeks before Christmas or the advent of Christ. Little kids have Advent calendars where a little door is opened every day with a little treat (small toy or candy) inside. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik

I've never been Mormon for even a fraction of a second, but I think the reason why Mormons don't celebrate Advent is because of their belief that the church went into apostasy very early on, therefore anything after that - the development of the Christian calendar, for example - is not of God/Christ/etc. Btw, I was raised United Methodist and Advent was a big deal.

He of the depressing mission call video that was taken down? You might recall his father kept whistling and his mother was glad to get him out of the house. He was *the* most underwhelmed future missionary on YouTube. Actually, depressed was more like it. Well, he has been at the MTC for 10 days now (if he actually went) and he'll be reporting to Edmonton for his mission. Anyway, I've th

Wow! It's been that long? I found RfM in '98 or '99 but didn't start posting immediately; I think I waited a year or so. I remember reading the stories late into the night and getting so angry and sobbing for the hell the writers had gone through. Congratulations and thanks to Erik, Susan, CZ and everyone who is or has helped keep this place functioning. It's a thankless job most of the

Those are quite some "friends" you have there. Sheesh. If you feel obligated to do something then donate to Heifer or Oxfam in their names. http://www.heifer.org/ http://www.oxfam.org/ Honestly, if they complain about this to you or anyone then you need to cut them off. Period. Horrid people.
