a recent email from my kid brother to my mother: " First transfer I was in Meadowood (the L-----'s ward) and 7 Hills with Elder Larsen and Harper. Second transfer I was in the same wards with just Elder Harper. Then on the 28th of December they split the area, Elder Harper stayed in 7 Hills and got the Singles ward and I stayed in Meadowood and got Elder Akaka as my new companion.

She doesn't sound like an alcoholic to me. She sounds like she likes to drink -- and if she can afford it, what's the harm, really? She's a little lost? She's 29!! Half the population is lost at 29!! One of my roommates works at a liquor distribution place, and gets a TON of free booze that he brings home. He drinks vodka tonics or cape codders every day. He brings home girls ALL the time -- l

Half the state's population lives within the 495 loop, and votes pretty progressive. Look at the makeup of the state senate and house -- almost entirely democrats, and not fake dems either. Yeah, there's some pockets of conservatives (I have family in North Adams) but they're not like southern conservatives that want to impose a value system. They are true New Englanders who follow the social-

Random, I know. Once upon a time I was a lowly (but hugely optimistic) intern for a not-so-auspicious senate campaign. Because of that, I was given 2 tickets to Martha Coakley's swearing in, TONIGHT 1/19, at the State House. I'm geeky enough to want to go, but I have class and can't make it. If anyone is in the area and interested (and okay with picking tickets up from harvard sq), email me: b

I have problems with the methodology. Really, Wisconsin number 1? California? NEW JERSEY? Clearly Massachusetts is number 1. We, after all, have an attorney general with her eye on taking down DOMA, and have had equal marriage since I was in high school. And Provincetown in and of itself should count for something...

which was sad (am I the only one that shows up late the the party, or have topics been closed faster?). But as my name was called, I am here to assist! Especially if your "name-brand east coast school" is, as we say when asked where we go to school, "Oh, it's in the Boston area." Anyway, as much as some others have faith in me, I did not grow up in Utah or out west or

I'll graduate undergrad with about $80,000 in loans. I figure on getting at least a half-scholarship for law school, and grants, and the rest government loans, and graduate somewhere around $200,000 in debt. Ideally I'll get a full-ride to law school, but who knows. If I don't go to law school, my payments on student loans would start at about $1000/month. No way I could afford that with an

39. I WIN.
My mom sent me a burn kit with bible and book of mormon quotes pasted to the outside. Oh yes, I do think it was a message.

Yeah, my brother doesn't break rules. My aunt is trying to get lunch with him on christmas (keep in mind, she is not mormon, my parents are both converts) and she got approval from the mission president or whomever, but he's still being difficult as she tries to arrange a place, because she doesn't know what his mission borders are and there's no way he'll cross them. My aunt is also pretty ir

I thought missionaries could call relatives on christmas, but my mom just told me that she's pretty sure they can only call "home" i.e. the parents. I thought they could call any family member. What are the actual rules (if it matters, all parties are in the USA)?

justleft, REALLY?!? He was like the worst governor in the history of Massachusetts. He BARELY spent any time in the state. And his great healthcare plan, let's be real, we all know Kennedy's office worked on it. Ted Kennedy spent more time caring about healthcare in a day than Romney EVER did. (That said, Deval Patrick can suck it. Can we please get another Dukakis? That'd be swell. Or even b

You're very lucky! Have a great time with her. Out of 5 siblings, there's really only a sister of mine who I'm still close with, and I wish I could spend christmas with her (especially because her husband is in afghanistan). We don't talk religion and we get along just fine. Have a very happy christmas!

I think Cheryl is right. My sister told me about my nephew's kindergarten class pageant -- they're singing the dreidel song, feliz navidad, some standard santa song, and I think away in a manger too. I LOVE that they have a hannukah song and a song in spanish. it's a private school, though, so it's not technically the same standard, but it's way inclusive.

Carol, thanks for the story about Barbra Streisand. Not only do I ADORE "the way we were" but she's pretty awesome overall. So good to know some background. My roommate has a dog, a fun black lab. I don't think I could ever get a cat again -- my cat was perfect and no one could live up to that. Michael, I called a good friend of mine, who's a theology and philosophy major, after

My kid brother has been on his mission since mid-September. I have gotten 5 letters from him. I write every other day or so. He's in Colorado. My cat died a couple weeks ago. My brother and I had raised these 2 cats since they were found in an abandoned box. One of them died a year and a half ago from a respiratory infection -- and he was my brother's cat. Mine died all of the sudden, apparent

Has anyone been treated similarly by a bishop? Shall we just have a role call, because I know of SEVERAL people on here that could answer in the affirmative. So I'll raise my hand first. They won't leave you alone. Resign. Threaten legal action. Don't hang out with the mormon kids. It's hard, but it's worse staying anywhere close to those kinds of people.

Lots of places have First Parishes. It makes sense. msmom, I went to the craft fair at First Parish Cambridge and thought of you! They had a lot of really cool stuff, and of course the talks they give there are always fascinating.

I'm going in march over spring break. A whole group of my friends and I decided this would be an excellent idea -- and we're also big fans of avenue q, so it just makes sense to go.

sorry guys, thanks for all the responses, but I had really limited internet while I was there and was never able to check back. I also didn't realize that you can't click on people's names to email anymore... the main purpose of my trip was grad school interviews, so who knows, maybe we'll all have a second chance next year!

I'm going to be on your island for the next week. I know I promised somebody I'd let them know if I ever made it to England, but for the life of me, I can't remember who I said that to. So a blanket post instead! I'll mostly be in London, so if you're around that area, email me and perhaps we can meet for drinks. It'd be fun, I've met rfmers all over the world and they're always awesome.

Am I the only one to read Oaks' description and react "holy shit! what is he doing working in religion!? he's brilliant!!" It's effing HARD to get a supreme court clerkship, and although I expect it wasn't quite so bad back then, it was still probably next to impossible. And Chicago is a top-notch law school -- their faculty put out so much research it's amazing. Why the hell is he i

I ended up calling and talking to his district president (I think?). Anyway, he said that he would talk to my brother and have him call my mom tomorrow. When I told my mom she was surprised I'd call the mtc, but didn't think it was a bad idea. she's gonna be released tomorrow, they didn't find a blockage in the test they were doing today, just that one of the heart muscles is a bit weak. I ass

2 days so far. Chest pains. Maybe a minor heart attack? They're still doing lots of tests. I've the the command center, basically, passing on info to the rest of the family after I hear from my mom. But I don't know what to do concerning my little brother -- the one in the MTC. Do they have an emergency line where I can contact him? Or do they deem this not important enough? If she's going i

He's going to Denver. I don't think he'll have a problem with the cold and snow -- we were raised in New Hampshire and Maine, after all. He definitely should know to carry an emergency kit, Summer, but being my airheaded brother, I wouldn't put it past him to not even think about it. apparently he forgot to bring paper to write letters on in the MTC. Brilliant kid, my brother. darkprinces

Haha, MJ, you're right! I don't watch a lot of hockey because I'm usually in the school library, but I hadn't thought of putting the highlights like that. Thanks for a terrific idea! And SusieQ, I understand what you're saying about letting people make their choices. I know he had to make his -- but that doesn't mean it's a *good* choice. I'm not writing about religion, I'm just writing do

As some of you may recall, my kid brother got his orders to go to Colorado. Well, he went to the MTC last Wednesday. He called me at about 11:45AM; our conversation was thus: Bro: "So, um, I'm leaving today." Me: "I know. You're making a monumental mistake, dude." Bro: "I'm not having this conversation with you." Me: "I know. But you know I had to say it.&
