It must be a mormon thing. I had a friend for many years. Met her at church of course and she was lie a guide to me as a new member. We were very open in our conversations and she was not shy of expressing any ill feelings towards a bishop, stake presidency, church policy, etc. I knew how she felt about the church and many leaders but she was faithful because she believed it to be true.

I believe you. As a member I belonged to a Stake Centre that was knows for not having hot water. There was hot water but it took forever to warm up, lasted very little and then once it was gone, you had to wait until at least the next day to start seeing lukewarm water again. This was awful on busy days or activity days, especially youth conferences where we were left to clean the kitchen wi

The mormon missionaries told me about their "unpaid" clergy and how everybody serves with no pay. I thought it was great how this loving and dedicated people dedicated their lives on their penny to server others. What those missionaries didn't tell me is that in their home town in Utah the lds church owned pretty much the city and man things in it. That the buildings for the offices w

If this is true, how shameful. The financial aspect of the church is a hot button for me, every time I read anything about it I get mad. How did I ever think my tithing was going to a good cause. grgrgrgr

This is sick in so many levels. And I don't believe that Dr. W. Wyl. Her account seems like a mormon whitewashed story. I tend to think that it was more like Joseph manipulating Kimball, the wife and daughter to make it sound like a divine request. Didn't he offer them their salvation in return? Poor girl.

Thank you for sharing this great news. I am a convert from Latin America and I know many who are. These topics, as common as they might be in Utah, are not so common in the Spanish speaking communities. News are usually behind. I can picture your father in law and the bishops in their meeting. Someone will express their outrage. Someone will say to stay focus. Someone will repeat their t

I hear you. I wish I had thought about how much money I gave vs how much we got back to YW and RS. Like you, I could have funded some very fun YW activities, good refreshments and who knows what more with all the money I gave to the church yearly. I never had any bishop give me a straight answer on how much the budget was. It was like it's not much but please you submit to me for approval.

NO, they don't. In fact, I think that they take so much from members that they are then not only unable to give to other charities but end up receiving assistance from those charities because the LDS church is pretty stingy in helping. Here in Ontario members give 10% of their income to the church but nothing goes to any organizations. Boys Scouts get the largest budget of the ward (at lea

Does she know you're not TBM anymore? Maybe she knows and she is love bombing you. You should have gone with your reply, that would have throw her off also, or maybe she wouldn't have noticed.

And it's stories like this that make me believe the church is a damaging, heartless organization. Far from the good church I thought it was. Hearing about kids who went without because of the parents faithfullness makes me more than sick, it makes me angry and there is very very few things that make me angry. I wish I could give 10-year-old-DonBagly a hug and good lunch.

Only those of us who have believed the whole thing can understand that continuing to believe it's not a lack of integrity. It's indoctrination. Now those who have believed and then have come to the knowledge that it is not true but knowingly and conveniently choose to stay and perpetuate the lies, those are the ones that lack integrity. Especially if there is something in it for them, but ev

What a wonderful idea to "own" it and speak at her baptism. She will remember that. After all it is a happy day for her. I think what you're planning on saying is good. Praise her and make it about her and how wonderful she is and how she can have a beautiful life. about this: -Praise my daugter for her ability to make such a big life decsion. (Of course her mother and grandpa

Ironic, you hear members make the observation that "the world" or at least here in Canada spends on average 20K on a wedding that is not as wonderful as a temple marriage. With all the money I paid in tithing I could have paid for many "worldy" weddings. Can't believe I gave so much money to that corporation. grrrrr D

Good to hear you brought it with your dad. It doesn't seem like he got defensive which I think it's a very good sign. TBMs tend to get defensive. Now that the communication is open you will be able to bring up concerns more easily and they may even see better how the church is using them. The most important thing they need to learn is to say no to the church. Even if they don't leave the

I wouldn't feel sorry for them, after all they are making their own decision. But, I would express how I felt. I'm not sure if it would backfire on you or not, or if they'd think you are a messenger from the dark side. But I think you're right in wanting them to know how this is not good for them or you, the grandkids, etc. Just like you are telling us, straight and sincere. And I'd even

I've thought about sending one for my father. But first I'd need to send one for myself. I think that when I do mine I will do his also. Love the Hinckley one.

At pretty much every GC I felt how you describe. Many of the stories, especially the war stories, the jokes, the faith promoting anecdotes, the quotes, the whole thing alwyas felt a little too-American and too-right wing for me. But I was the one at fault, I needed to be humble and listen to the servants of the Lord without judgement. With time I got used to it. I'm sure the German guy loves

The TBM mind rationalizes this way: If bad happens to others is a punishment from HF If bad happens to good mormons, it's a test from God and then a blessing I suppose in the case of a MP is the devil trying to stop the work.
