The church has issued a policy that politicians get a pass. It is understood that they have to take contradictory positions on issues because of politics. It's like GBH saying "I don't know we teach that" in regard to King Follett discourse. It's a popularity move. (Of course GBH doesn't have to worry about elections and could have afforded an honest response.) This cuts both w

What is best for the kids should probably be the top priority (I understand there are conflicting/competing priorities). Figuring out what is best for the kids in not 100% known since no one has a crystal ball. It involves making educated guesses about everyone's behavior in the future under various scenarios. My Mom was put in a no win situation. Divorce was best per all of her children

1999 Seminary teacher of my son said he had done the math and... the second coming is 2006. So the most important things you can do is be faithful in the church and serve a mission. (If the world is ending so soon why would anyone bust their butt in college.)

They say cagey stuff, about being special witnesses to Christ. Of course the experiences are too sacred to talk about. The faith promoting rumors of the Q15 seeing Christ in the temple regularly are rampant.

Add: Just figured out the third path for resolving the conflict of believing things that are not true. Avoiding the conflict all together. Just refuse to examine them. Put everything on a shelf. Hands over your ears, singing "I can't hear you". My grandmother would always say, "We don't talk about that." The problem with this is that you're a glassy eyed child like na

No one expects the Mormon inquisition. (AKA strengthening the members committee.) Keeping tabs on their members - it's like it's a cult or something.

OH I know! I've been fascinated with Stringfellow since I heard all the relatives tell the story at a gathering in the 70's. It was live TV - all of Utah was watching. There were a few who wondered if he really believed, because they bought his sincerity. Was he sincere or not that was the discussion. Somehow believing things that weren't true was a viable hypothesis in this Mormon crowd (go

I've been thinking about the culty practices of the church and what effects can be laid at their feet. Can the emotional telling and retelling of a story that you initially knew was "hyperbole" cause you to no longer distinguish between fact and reality? Take Congressman Stringfellow. Back in the fifties he resigned from office in humiliation exposed as a fraud. After the wa

My Mom had asthma, she had to leave the valley for a week or more at a time or she would wind up hospitalized. At first she just checked into hotels, but eventually she decided it would be more cost effective to buy a place. Finding a place to breath turned into a huge search. Park City and Heber can get just as bad, plus higher altitude means less oxygen. She had to get clear out to the

I think it's all awesome. The church is revealing itself. Some people might have silently hoped OW would get an audience and a response. People are Googling "John Dehlin". They are going to find Mormon Stories. It will create a lot of questions in a lot of people's minds. http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%2Fm%2F04f2d94%2C%20%2Fm%2F01wc8_&cmpt=q http://www.google.c

The LDS church sure isn't on Charity Navigator. Only legitimate charities with open books are on there.

Our god in his mortal existence grew up in circumstances that caused him to be illiterate. Why else could he create planets but can't create a book without JOseph Smith as middle man?

85. Welcome
You have a sense of obligation, we've been there done that. Here are two questions you're going to have to work through. 1) If it's not true, do you even want to know? It seems you're open to finding this out, so you're past the first big hurdle. You're willing to examine. 2) Is the church in your life a net positive or a net negative? If it's true, then it has infinite worth,

You are trying to come to a rational conclusion. I think it boils down to "you are pointing out our perceived weaknesses and short comings to an audience". "Turn it off"* * See The Book of Mormon (the musical).

I think you're onto something. The whole "are Mormons christian" isn't a very important topic to exmo's, but the Sandra Tanner interview got me questioning what do Christians believe? And maybe from their standpoint Mormons aren't Christian. From her Christian perspective inventing a monopoly on NEW - not from Christ in any testament (including BOM) - ordinances to partake of hi
