I can't even reply. I got stuck with the advertisement selling thousands of rounds of ammunition for pennies.

Doubt your doubts is synonymous with put your issues on the shelf and ignore it. Not very helpful advice unless you just want to believe regardless. It not a tool to actually find the truth.

I wish we were in the same ward. I am the HPGL. It would be a fantastic ward council. :-)

I did as well as my TBM wife, when an uber righteous high councilman was preaching about tithing. We both involuntarily laughed when he said you should pay just a little bit more than 10% of gross income just to be safe. He was totally serious and didn't enjoy our laughter. It was so spontaneous you could hear it across the chapel.

Mormons will ritualistically say, “I know the Book of Mormon is true”. This phrase falls from their lips as easily and without thought as someone saying “how are you” when you pass you in the hall at work. It’s just a phrase without truly much deeper meaning than to give oneself comfort and to be a sign that you are part of the team. But if a Mormon actually did think about thi

I have always viewed life and understanding truth as a bit like a puzzle. We don't have all of the pieces. With the few pieces we do have, we then extrapolate a worldview that makes sense with the evidences (puzzle pieces) that we do have. Early in my life I used my puzzle pieces to help me believe that the mormon church was true. Then I found more and contradictory puzzle pieces. I ultima

I hope it is only your sister who comes to lunch. But if this is an intervention, just order a nice beer and smile at them while you enjoy it.

If you abandon mormonism your are labeled as prideful, arrogant, unteachable and faithless. If you abandon your prior religion for mormonism you are labeled as humble, teachable and faithful. Never really made sense to me.

Condo sales are mixed. The biggest project (and most expensive) is only about 30% sold. The less expensive (but still expensive) units on the east and south side of the development have sold better. But overall there is a lot of condo inventory just sitting there. Great investment opportunity. Not! Here is a link on what is sold and available. http://citycreekliving.com/99-west/floor

I am not sure why there is a problem with the $5 billion number. The church new media source (KSL) reported the chamber of commerce number and didn't qualify it. The owner of the church media outlet did not ask for a retraction or correction. As far as I am concerned, the number is as good as any other. They spent a lot of money.

Yes he is a liar. Like we never tear down other churches. NOT. From day one we were doing it. "I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, the

Yes. He definitely was talking about a book for at least 6 years. The other thing to remember is that making up stories was where he was very comfortable. Just look at his impressive resume. The book of mormon Bible retranslation Doctrine and covenants (numerous revelations) Book of abraham Parchment of John Kinderhook plates Telling stories about ancient scriptures is what he d

I am in the middle of the book, but found it fascinating how many others were delivering a similar message of the kingdom of God and being the messiah over roughly 100+ years around the time of Christ. Very eye opening.

He speaks with passion and confidence. Even if it comes from a defensive place in order to protect his fragile ego. The typical mormon just sees the confidence and it in turns makes them feel better. A highly educated dodo believes. So it must be true. :/

The latter day prophets and apostles are afraid to speak, afraid to answer, afraid to take a position which they know is untenable. They are afraid to be wrong, so they speak in generalities which need no defense and are unwilling to be brave and take a strong position in defending their testimonies. Why? I don't know. How do you defend the indefensible?

My current ward has the highest attendance in our stake, but membership attendance is slipping. The stake has noticed. And currently our BP is bringing up the topic in ward council. He doesn't have any specifics on what we are supposed to do. But yes to the OP. They try.

Yep. Men have procreative powers as well. So men get twice the blessings than women who only get 9 months of pregnancy and a life time of nurturing. Sounds like a fair balance to me. /sarcasm

Dishonesty. How many of you would stay in a relationship if the other partner regularly lied to you, or even told you parts of the truth to only mislead you as to what was actually going on? Or was so bold as to actually tell you up front, that they weren't going to let you know everything going on in their lives, because you just don't need to know stuff like that. It isn't very useful.

I like that your wife encouraged one last letter. The guy was wanting to have his argument heard and then shut down the conversation. You got to give him some additional things to think about. That is probably all that you can do. I agree that you should probably let it go at that. Life is too short to force people to be aware of their delusions.

It will never change. Mormons have no boundaries and they are fully convinced they need to save you. When that is your mission in life, you have a free pass to do almost anything you want. I am embarassed of the things I have done in my life with this kind of mindset.

Mental gymnastics at its best. I love the ending argument that echoes the "joseph could never have known" position. He uses two examples. (1) abraham teaching astronomy and (2) abraham being sacrificed and then declares that these were unavailable to joseph from the bible, but are now available from other ancient sources. What he forgets to tell us is that josephus and the anti

Great job. The bishop was just using the age old tactic of trying to make people feel useful and needed. It is a psychological trick to try get people committed to an organization or product. We need you. We all want to be needed. But he was disingenous in his attempt.

Mormons are below average in generating high income earners (over $100,000 per year). Who does the best job in america? Jews and Hindus. http://www.pewforum.org/Income-Distribution-Within-US-Religious-Groups.aspx

The presiding bishopric wields a large portion of control over the business enterprises of the church. The first presidency provides direction and oversight, but that could be limited by the mental capacity of the geriocracy in place at the time. From legal standpoint Monson is legally authorized to do whatever the hell he wants. The church is structured as a corporation sole under the d

Hello RHGC. I see that you have asked a couple of times how I could be an 8th generation mormon when it is only 9 generations back to your mayflower heritage. I did answer you last night on another post, but thought you might miss it so I put this in as its own post. I am a descendant from James Allred who was born in 1784 and who joined the church in 1832 at the age of 48. The line o

Sorry to threadjack. But my original mormon ancestor was James Allred. He was baptized at about the age of 48 within a year or two of the church's founding. I am number 8 down the line from him, all mormons. The number of generations all depends upon how quickly people have kids. If you run through the oldest kid in each generation, they add up fairly quickly.

Here is the discussion for ward council last week in my ward. (1) Talked about people with health issues and how we can help them. (2) Talked about people who don't have jobs and then observed how most of it is their own fault and they don't want to help themselves. (3) Talked about reports the stake wants regarding "the rescue". That is how to get people more active and commi
