I agree that groups like the church of christ could use the BOM more easily than the brighamites in salt lake today. I was definitely writing my post from a salt lake mormon perspective. The BOM just does nothing from my perspective to support the current "gospel" preached by the salt lake mormons. It actually contradicts it on a regular basis. So much for the prophecy.

The bishop would simply say that they were unworthy to serve as a missionary because they are unwilling to be obedient. I don't see how the missionary has any leverage over the BP or SP in this situation. I would love to see it happen, but they really don't care about the individuals serving. It is all about the great and spacious building.

In 2 Nephi 3, we find this prophecy of the coming forth of the BOM and what it will accomplish: 12 Wherefore, the fruit of thy loins shall write; and the fruit of the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of the loins of Judah, shall grow together, UNTO THE CONFOUNDING OF FALSE DOCTRINES and la

I met recently with a developer in this industry (retail shopping centers) and I asked him about his perspective on City Creek. He indicated that the initial rush to purchase there has met the retailers expectations. But they are very concerned what will happen after the honeymoon period. They are still unsure who their ongoing customers will be given that many of the stores are high end

If people still continued to believe after the kirkland anti-banking fiasco, they will still believe even if city creek is shuttered and closed. At least my opinion. But at least there could be hope in this scenario. Many people did reject the church after the kirkland fiasco. So at least there is hope some mormons could free themselves. But I prophecy that it would continue on in

It is a natural tendency for everyone to want to tell your own story in your own way. And when you are not bound by truth and honesty you can really spin whatever you want into a really faith promoting story. That's why the church is so good at it.

I loved your story. Living well is the only thing to do. Hopefully those we love will be happy for us. If not? That's there problem.

Mormon scriptures (BOM and D&C) clearly teach that the Mormon God is willing to lie. In Mormon scriptures, in at least one situation, God allowed a false plan of salvation to be taught (i.e., a literal hell after the resurrection for everyone who did not accept Christ and endure to the end). Mormon scriptures also explain that he/God did this on purpose. Milk before meat argument. And a

A friend's son was called to serve in germany at the time Dieter was becoming more visible in the LDS hierarchy. This missionary was promised, by revelation, that the missionary work in germany was about to explode and he was specially called to participate in this grand revival in the father land. Not even one baptism. I love revelation.

My favorite tactic with stubborn TBMs is to just ask then to define what true means to them. When they tell me they know the BOA is true. What does that mean? Abraham really wrote it 4000 years ago. Literal translation from papyri. It teaches spiritual and physical truths. Once a TBM is willing to put a definition behind their testimony of truth, then you have ground to have a

To be a faithful mormon, you have to live on the surface. If you begin to ask any questions, it all begins to break down. I have a faithful friend who keeps telling me there are answers out there. I tell him, yes he is right. There are answers out there and they all point that the church is not true.

The church is averaging about a 1% growth rate per year (if you use average unit growth as a more real proxy for membership growth). If there are 5 million active members (that may be generous), then the annual growth of participating members is 50,000. That means there are about 350,000 mormons each year who either die or become inactive in the church or officially remove their names (assu

The missionary program actually currently runs a deficit. The increase in number of missionaries is having a negative financial effect on the current church budgets. I know they didn't make a big deal about it in conference, but you should note the call for more donations to the missionary program in several of the talk, and specifically from Monson. That is to shore up this shortfall. Ho

I had asked a man to teach in priesthood one day. At the time of the lesson he seemed clearly overwhelmed and had a hell of a week coming up to the lesson. I apologized for asking him to give the lesson and told him, he should have let me know about his challenges. His response? I always do what my leaders tell me to do. I need the blessing. What a crazy and dangerous mindset.

My favorite quote from the advanced topics section. "People do leave the Mormon Church – the Church isn’t comfortable for everyone. They may take issue with Mormon theology, they may have been offended by other members, they may want to behave in ways not allowed by the Mormon Church. However, the anti-Mormon ex-Mormons are not the best source for information on the Mormon Church as t

On the thread about the pioneer celebration, it made me think about the miracles that are proclaimed from the handcart companies as well as the misery. In the movie 17 miracles, it shows multiple times when God miraculously provided food. Once it was a pie on the trail. Another time it was in the form of miraculously growing bread in a dutch oven. There were other examples. I hate this d

God has a right to change his mind at any time. In the book of mormon it teaches a literal hell for you sinners here on this board after the resurrection. He has now changed his mind and you all will now go to the telestial kingdom. Except Steve. He is probably a son of perdition. :-)

On Sunday our HCman informed us that the church's deseret industries stores were going to expand the number of slots available to people who were struggling. This would provide employment and job training for even more people. Wow. What a great humanitarian church, he said. This is clearly inspired and shows how the church loves and cares for its members. Then today I ran across (was rem

I live in mormon stronghold in the heart of Zion. On sunday I learned that there is a extensive strategy to reactivate the young single adults in our area. The plan? Ask each regular ward in the area to rat out, I mean disclose any YSA age kids regardless of whether or not they are members. And then give this list to the YSA ward. In the YSA ward they have called no less than 20 ward m

Back in the 80's (before DNA research), I taught a family from El Salvador. They really weren't that interested. But during the discussion about the book of mormon a brother of the family walked into the room and got really excited about a book of scriptures written by his people. That excitement spilled over the the rest of the family. That was the primary reason they got baptised. Be

I like to play with TBMs when they do this. After a testimony statement (I know the BOM is true) I simply ask what does that mean? After each statement I keep repeating the same question. Mormon truth claims are only two questions away from absurdity, even for mormons.

Running a cult is expensive. Woops, sorry. I mean business. No that can't be right. Is it a religion? No that's not right either. Anyway, indoctrination is expensive.
