If a mormon mission involved serving in Habitat For Humanity, it would garner some serious positive PR for TSCC. Maybe/might/could reduce the number of disillusioned mishies who "fall away".

"The whole Mormon experience revolves around suffering and being miserable ..." The less "spiritual" merely have to trudge along the Treadmill to Zion (tm), faces frozen in an eternal rictus of despair. The more "exhalted" make the same journey with 20 bricks in their backpacks, faces brightened by forced clown-face smiles. Onward, Ye Saints, Celestial City

I get a very specific kind of "flashback" - it's the "Oh Shit" moment when I realized how weird mormons and their "church" are, followed by the question, "What have I gotten myself into". Three months later, possibly fewer, I resolved never to go back.

Just to make sure the world falls in line, MomoCo (?) somehow prevailed upon the New York Times to reprint several days ago, "'Mormon' No More", on the front page (now off): https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/29/us/mormon-church-name-change.html

"A beautiful example of mathematics in nature. Of course, many teachers find a way to make it boring." One of my high-school math teachers was a short-statured, foul-tempered, ex Golden Gloves boxer who seemed forever on the verge of a volcanic eruption. We weren't bored ... we were terrified.

My active time among the marmints was less than 6 months - and I can still recall feeling uneasy being among those weird, phony, affected people who could not stop talking about their religion, in church or not. Nothing less than syndromic behavior.

I wouldn't exercise the "nuclear" option from the get-go (screaming, threatening, etc) - hold that in reserve. On their next visit, open the door, verify that they are indeed, Mormons, and, smiling all the while, say something like: "Your idiotic religion is so completely silly and stupid, that I laugh just thinking about people actually paying money to belong to it."

I went to a Catholic high school in the early 1960's and Mr. B., a teacher of English, was generally understood to be gay. He was a sharp dresser, the coolest cat on staff - and nobody gave a god-damn what his orientation was. There is no way in Hell that the Catholic administrators didn't know that he was gay, and they clearly had no qualms about him - he taught there for years. In my 12

"One major thing that is causing me qualms especially, is the “I love you” and “you’re my soulmate” two months in the relationship." My interpretation: this is a _clear_ sign that he is engaging in projection (or even calculated manipulation?). This is unlikely to end well. Your spidey-sense has been triggered; I'd listen to it.

"It was his identity" Identity is an essential characteristic of the human psyche - but how and why some are fulfilled by that which is patently absurd, and not infrequently harmful, baffles me. Mormonism is baffling.

When mormons dismiss tenet/practice/dogma as "folklore", I remind them that their entire 'religion' is folklore - concocted by an upstate bumpkin.

Start with the easy stuff, first. Let's see the 'prophet' cure a case of athlete's foot - then we move on to greater challenges. The usual Mopologist response will be: "It doesn't work like that." My usual response to MoPo-man will be: "It doesn't work, PERIOD, Skippy".

I figure MoMo Co has a decade or less to reverse current trends or it will slide into stagnation. And I don't really see the trends as reversible. Full credit to Prez Nelson for making changes - but they will not arrest the trends which must be arrested: hence stalemate.

"My answer, "Most are not 'rules' - but a member asserting authority where none exists." In other words, most of these examples are somebody pulling a Church example to suit their purpose at the moment. They're bluffing - like poker, except using gospel chips." Interesting observation - we must also consider the moral panic and existential terror that afflict the mormon com

"They only need to look at the RC church to see how even the biggest religions can mishandle such an issue." The Vatican is an exemplar of how to mismanage a scandal - but I think it is partially a reflection of conservative elements in the RCC that don't want the scandal handled in any way that they might find "inconvenient".
