The TBM answer to that one is "we don't need to know that for our salvation", or "answers to all the mysteries will be revealed in the next life".

You are correct here, Richard Foxe, in that I didn't bother to research the source of the quote. This particular quote does seem to fall in the spurious category, and, indeed, there are many other misquotes all over the internet. Thank you for reminding me to look up quotes before posting them. Regardless of the origin, I posted this quote because it agrees with my view of religions in gener

Just read this quote. He was a wise man in many ways. "Religions are all alike - founded upon fables and mythologies." --Thomas Jefferson

That was the running joke in our clerks office, "what are they gonna do, fire us?" lol Yeah, when they came out with that list to check off, including the one on screen in MLS saying the bishop knew about it, I just checked yes and sent them back.

If you resign, and they still stalk you, then you have legal recourse. As long as you are a member, they will continue to seek you out by whatever means necessary.

I only found it cultish because it was a religion doing the tracking. If there is a legal reason to find someone, I don't see it in the same light.

When I was the membership clerk and they started to push this idea that we were supposed to be doing all this leg work to find people that didn't want to be found, I just laughed and thought to myself, they aren't paying me enough to do that full time job. Even as a TBM, I found it intrusive. The most I did was to ask family members if they had a forwarding address, and many of them weren't

It does muddy the waters that there seem to be some atheists that treat it as a belief system.

Thanks for the help everyone. Sorry, I know this has been done to death and it is semantics. I was really looking for a better definition. My definition came from the wiki link, thanks pseudonymous, and I see atheism as being a passive thing not an active doctrine or belief system, as theists want to make it.

In a conversation on FB I've stated that atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist, as contrasted with theism, which is the belief that at least one deity exists. Everyone is born an atheist. The TBM is saying atheism is believing God doesn't exist, being Agnostic is saying you don't know if God exists or not. Webster online says: a : a disbelief in the existence of

Anything is possible when you believe in magic! And, after all, they were being personally instructed by god himself! What could possibly go wrong? (well, other than that no air thing, and the no light thing, and the upside-down thing with all that feces)

This was the main reason we decided to resign. I couldn't see myself teaching our daughter how to live a lie. Modeling integrity is important for kids to see.

After looking at the article again, I see there were a lot of comments from atheists. It was good to see an opposing view to the Christian-privilege mindset. I agree with the poster "Miss". He/she is a voice of reason. Seemes like an awful lot of hate coming from those loving Christians.

I suspect they are watching fox news and buying into the idea of a "war on religion". They consider themselves Christians so they side with anything they think promotes Christianity.

A TBM posted, on FB, a link to this article. From the comments on the article: "To what reason does an atheist even have concern over any cemetery since they believe that all life ceases with death? A cemetery is a place that shows respect for the hope of life in the future. Once again this just shows how the atheists are about as evil as ISIS." Why do theists feel so justified in

All the ones I've met have been very pushy, obnoxious and hypocritical. I would agree, they are worse than many Mormons.

Good luck! Sounds like you're on the right track. The polygamy thing seems to be a sore spot for many women, and to find out they've been duped into accepting it is especially difficult.

My best friend, met in the 5th grade, was catholic. We talked a little about religion but mostly because I was curious about his. He never tried to convert me, and religion, for him, was not that big of a deal. They went to church when they felt like it. I was best-man at his church wedding. I lived in Italy for 3 years surrounded by Catholics. Never once had one bring up religion or try

For my wife, the issue of polygamy was a big issue. You may want to bring that one up with her. As for the idea that the TSCC does plenty of good, I would say it does far more harm than it has ever done good.

Maybe it's discussed "most vehemently by those holding no belief whatever" because those holding the beliefs tend to pass laws forcing those beliefs on those holding no belief. Islamic countries are a great example. They are not allowed to discuss anything contrary to the state religion without risking the penalty of death. Seems like a good reason to examine something that make

According to the mormon narrative, Jesus volunteers to be the savior which includes "dying for our sins", in return, he gets to be "god" over us, since he has purchased us with his blood. Since he is our "brother", this has elevated his status to eternal god of us. Seems like he got a littler richer in the deal.

I hadn't thought of it that way before, but, seems plausible. Assuming a belief in the myth, perhaps "we" aren't really what that whole story was about. Maybe this was all about Jesus doing what he had to do to allow him to claim godhood over all us little folk (or cows as mentioned above). We would just benefit by default, since it was really just about him gaining more glory/infi

Kinda like what the OP says in number 5: "5. The reason behind the sacrifice—mankind’s original sin—makes no sense. Why blame Adam for a moral lapse that he couldn’t even understand? Remember that he hadn’t yet eaten the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, so who could blame him when he made a moral mistake? And how can we inherit original sin from Adam? Why bl

Which brings us to number 6: "6. Jesus made a sacrifice—big deal. Jesus is perfect, so his doing something noble is like water flowing downhill. It’s unremarkable since he’s only acting out his nature. What else would you expect from a perfect being? But imagine if I sacrificed myself for someone. In the right circumstance, I’d risk my life for a stranger—or at least I hope I w
