Hi Ultra - I was a foster parent for many years and can tell you that the mission of every foster care system is to reunite the child with the biological parent, if at all possible. It does seem incredibly soon - just 4 days - to be returning a child to a parent that just got out of jail. Usually, several months of social services and court hearings are required to determine if a parent, rece

Jackson Katz gives a powerful TED Talk taking on the cultural norms and institutions that produce abusive men and the establishment of rape culture, racism, and oppression in our society. The misogynistic, homophobic, and racist doctrines and culture of Mormonism sprang to mind as I listened to this, especially in light of the violent backlash against Kate Kelly and Ordain Women. http://www.t

I left the church over 18 years ago. In many ways I'm still the same person I was as a Mormon. There are a lot of aspects that I have consciously chosen to keep practicing mainly because I felt these principles have generally served me well in life. Recently, however, I have developed a bit of an angry potty mouth. As a Mormon, I strictly controlled my language....now, when I'm angry, I s

Beth - First, congratulations to your son, he sounds like an amazing young man! I hope everything works out for him. As a mother myself, I understand your desire to help your son realize his full potential. However, I fully agree with what Anon for this one wrote above. My son was only 20 years old when he was accepted with a full scholarship to a prestigious law school. The thing is... I di

The other day DH and I were talking about the 40 plus hours per week he used to spend just on TSCC callings. It was like a second full time job! He was constantly gone. With four little children at home it was incredibly difficult on our family to not have him available to us. When I left TSCC they stopped giving him significant callings. I assumed that was due to his association with an apo

Seeking a trophy husband is a carryover from the early church. Women with husbands were openly encouraged to seek to be sealed to a man with a higher priesthood. Even men were sealed as eternal sons to other men who held a higher priesthood. The belief being that their position in the celestial kingdom would be greater than what the could otherwise obtain on their own. A few years after my

Actually, I've had more problems with ex-mormons that lie than I ever had with active Mormons. I tend to be too trusting in general, but especially of my "community/tribe" so to speak. I don't believe that Mormons tend to lie any more than the rest of humanity.

James and Ruth Faust lived in our ward. My father & mother-in-law were their home teachers. DH and I filled in as their home teachers when his parents were traveling.

Tal, I don't appreciate your threatening text message last night, and the threatening email you suggested above that I read asap. I have no idea what your email said as your emails have been blocked. But your text message indicated that you were threatening me to keep me from posting here. No doubt you intend to reveal something I told you in confidence. That certainly shows your true charact

My 29 year old daughter went through a stage in her early 20s when she dated men 10 to 15 years older. They were more mature mentally and financially than the men her own age. At some point, however, she realized that these men were just old, and often had baggage such as ex-wives, children, and never-ending alimony and child support payments. She also felt like she was just an accessory for the

My father was 10 years older than my mother. He also died and left her a widow many years ago. She is still alive but says that that was the hardest thing for her to go through.

Did you even consider dating someone closer to your own age? Sounds like a sick ego trip for some men to see if they can get a girl as young as their own children. Joseph Smith was only 22 years older than He

She should be going in soon for an OB/GYN checkup. Go with her to that appointment and bring up your concern to the doctor. As her husband, you can even call her doctor and express concern. They may have a nurse call to check on her recovery after the birth and recommend she come in for a checkup.

My father was a Marine in the South Pacific during World War II. Hiding in a foxhole, starving, he swore that if got out alive he would never let his family starve like that. My parents canned and put food storage away religiously. It wasn't because of Mormonism it was because they grew up during the Depression and survived the War. TSCC started their welfare program and the directive that it's

My blessing was so basic that it pretty much came true even down to the part where it says, "your spirit will be as clear as crystal. You have the power of discernment and will know truth from error." I used my super crystal power and discerned truth from TSCC error. Although, I don't think this is quite what the patriarch had in mind. lol

Thank you, everyone, for your kind thoughts! It has been a dream come true to have my daughter's garden wedding at our farm! HopefulHusband - If you love each other, hang in there. I was out for ten years while my DH was TBM. Ironically, we came very close to divorce after my DH left. Even if your spouse eventually leaves the risk of divorce is still very real as she struggles to redefine he

I also went through when the blood oaths were still used. I did the five points of fellowship with my fiance bringing me through the veil so he could learn my new name (which he promptly forgot). As we walked into the celestial room, I turned to him with shock and stated, "They just threatened my life!" I tried to look for deeper meaning in the temple but just never felt any joy or

I have been an occasional contributor here for almost two decades, although, I rarely start a thread. I thought it was fitting to do so today because my family and I have come to a major stepping stone in our recovery from Mormonism. Our somewhat perilous journey out of Mormonism has taken almost twenty years to complete. It appears that we have finally made it out with our marriage and family in

It is fabric. Cheaply constructed, nothing special fabric. Throw it in the trash can. The act of throwing them out, along with all things Mormonism, is incredibly cathartic.

I completely agree with you icedtea, however, the married women view almost any other woman, married or not, as a threat. If they are that insecure, imagine how shallow their marriages must be. I have two TBM sisters that have never married - more than likely they never will. Over the years they have been increasingly marginalized. They have struggle to find any real sense of identity inside

Huntsman certainly recognizes that TSCC does not do real charitable work in the world. That he takes it one step further and compares TSCC to a country club - where dues are required to be members - is telling. I also doubt that he pays 10% on this *gross* income. Hinkley was always sucking up to Huntsman and used Hunstmans private jet for church use. I wonder if Hunstman considered the cost o

I have four close friends, and a niece, who each lost a loved one who took their own life The thing they do most is blame themselves feeling that, somehow, they could have prevented, or may have even caused this tragedy. They feel not only an indescribable loss, they may also feel intense guilt. They will still move through the grieving process, however, depending on the circumstances, they ma

When my DH and I were first married we lived in his parents' house for a year while they were on an extended business trip. My in-laws were James and Ruth Faust's home teachers (yes, the top 15 have home teachers) so DH and I filled in for them while they were away. Ruth was especially kind. James was a lot like my father-in-law but with more of business man demeanor. We also lived next door to

I have an in-law that was a science professor at BYU Hawaii. In the process of my shelf cracking, I had a long conversation with him about human evolution vs Adam and Eve. He reconciled the issue by believing that the temple creation endowment is figurative (it does say that right in there). He believes that when humans evolved to the point of self awareness that God pulled two individuals fro
