You want to make sure you don't do anything that would endanger your tax-exempt status. Religion is the best scam going. Tithing is not just free money, but tax-free money both for giver and receiver.

I was always kind of a doubter, but I remember my seminary teacher saying that as Mormons what we're really seeking is truth. My thought at the time was, okay, I have some doubts about a lot of this, but I can get on board with that, and that's what drove me for some time. However my doubts persisted, and when I met them full on and discovered that Moism was not just based on lies but on big f

Done & Done Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I found this to be the heart of the matter: I totally agree. Or put another way: Mormonism's truth-claims are the rope with which they will hang themselves. The only way to slip the noose requires younger, more progressive thinkers, so when you're run by octogenerians (or older, good gawd!) the chances

I got a copy from the public library and read it on my lunch hour sitting in a public plaza. I remember quietly swearing under my breath as I read about his fraudulent Kirkland Banking scheme and philandering with young girls. He was a charlatan, but he wasn't even a particularly good one who got himself killed before he turned 40. We were taken in by a sh!tty, garden variety conman! That added i

Great cartoon! His major hits were written by Jimmy Webb: "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", and "Galveston". That was such a great collaboration. Webb is an amazing songwriter. Another cover on Campbell's "Wichita Lineman" album is "Dock of the Bay" which my older sister must have played a million times growing up. I thought

I tore through it similarly. If you liked that one, I can also recommend "Tell It All" by Fanny Stenhouse. It's another compelling autobiography of a polygamous wife from the same time period. All those sister-wife yarns we heard growing up in the morg about glorious polygamy was when really it was no different from living in a RLDS compound with Warren Jeffs.

Privacy laws and enforcement have not kept up at all with technology. Not only that but the U.S. Congress just sold us all down the river even farther recently: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-net-neutrality-open-internet-fcc-perspec-0420-20170419-story.html They won't need to read our minds, they'll already know everything they need to and then some. I guess I was just thinking about it from Jesus' perspective. It really was NOT a good day for him. Warning sacreligious: http://www.oshannonland.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/mrs.-jesus-joke-2.jpg Have a great weekend everyone (may require maintaining a safe distance from TBM family).

The Andrew Sisters I think is the best women's harmony group of all time. Considering that recording with full big band was very likely done live with no overdubbing is a testament to the high level of musicianship. This is drastically different than the overproduced CA example which is more a tribute to technical innovations in recording than musicianship. It doesn't have the energy of 20 or

It happened in England (aka "The Baseball Baptisms"), Japan, San Diego, extensively in Central and South America (they eventually dissolved 45 stakes to fix the low, low attendance issues), etc. Too many to list, and I imagine in the Mormon world in which only faith-promoting experience is perpetuated, there is virtually no record of these goings-on. I wish someone would try to write a

Music has the power! See what one sousaphone (yes, just one!) did to change the character of this KKK march: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZdj_7dTfCs I really like it when he goes into Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries". Played by a lone sousaphone turns it into Laurel & Hardy. Trolled by a lone sousaphone! That anonymous dude is my folk hero!

Don't be a hypocrite and judge your neighbor is a Christian virtue I can still be on board with. Seems like it's been in short supply as of late.

This is a quote that my awesome sister made on FB. These are wise words IMO: "I choose to live without fear, believing that all humans as a species have the same basic interests. We want safety, comfort and meaningful work. Fear leads to war. That's it. We should work to reduce the fear in our enemies rather than justify it."

It's been disturbing to me how many closet bigots, racists, etc. have been popping up. Some of these are friends and acquaintances that I had no idea about. They are not wise enough not to repost things on FB that are obviously pretty hateful. It's causing me anxiety with physical symptoms which has never happened to me before! It feels like peoples' ids are overriding their empathy. I know de

That doesn't fit his character. After all, he went to all the trouble of setting up a printing press and publishing the Expositor. His life was quite the opposite of JS; he was a plainspoken, honest, and educated man.

A good practical book to read on this is "The Inner Game of Music" https://www.amazon.com/Inner-Game-Music-Barry-Green/dp/0385231261 When I was studying bass many years ago, I recall my teacher, who was a friend of author, Barry Green, that he was writing a book on music performance psychology. I finally read it last year and wish I had read it 20 years earlier! Here's some excellent no

It's funny that the letter is written supposedly to you and about you, but it's really all about them. It's more about trying to bolster their own faith than any real concern about you.

JS was a poorly educated (though certainly curious) conman. Did anyone really see the plates other than with their "spiritual eyes"? Mostly they were in a bag as witnessed by third parties, yes? How did a ill educated young man produce the likes of the of BoM? Well, quite simply he didn't. As far as the text goes I think Solomon Spalding and Sidney Rigdon did the heavy lifting. If th

I've told this story on here a couple times before, but here goes again: My (still TBM) brother was bishop during the time when the 1st Presidency came out with the no oral sex "revelation". It created a sh!tstorm of problems for my brother with counseling couples since it created problems where there were none or few before. The question was even added to TR questions. Eventually

I heard this radio program yesterday https://www.revealnews.org/episodes/secrets-of-the-watchtower/ and was quite astounded what fertile ground the JWs are for sexual abuse. I used to think the JWs were in roughly the same league as Mos for cultiness, but after hearing this, I think they have the Mos beat by a substantial margin. I really think the JWs should be investigated by law enforcement an

Don't make the explanation too complicated. I learned in kindergarten that people who can't keep their story straight are not to be trusted. Is there anyone in the history of the world that told such varying stories and was found to be reliable in the end? Name even one example.

I don't know if that's the right question. I grew up in a black/white religion and was prone to black/white thinking in the first place! Not a good combination. After much personal evolution I finally realized I live in a very gray world. No experience is all good or bad. My realization was that a tendency to black/think think is a product of hating uncertainty. I am finally learning to liv

I served in San Diego Mission 1981-83 right after his tenure. He devised a scheme called "Approach to Commitment" in which all the discussions were taught at once en masse. How this played out was the missionaries would round up Mexican fieldworkers, "teach" them, and baptize them en masse right on the spot. He produced some incredible numbers, but eventually the area SPs g

She's kind of Dolly Partonesque in that she's a singer, songwriter, and guitar picker and doing them all well. She also has lots of personality and stage presence. Those types aren't hanging out on every street corner. I'd say she's got a promising career. Even more so now that she just escaped the jaws of Mormonism.
