There late 70s early 80s. Only faith promoting stories allowed. Prophets were flawless, one drop of blood was the rule when I showed up, new revelation later that people with one (or more drops) of blood could now hold the priesthood, oh and there was conversion therapy going on in some basement lab.

Far-left? Me thinks there be a troll amongst us. With the said, during the long and dreary time when ‘my eyes were closed’ I lived in very different parts of the country over the years. There I found congregations to be a reflection of correlated Mormonism mingled with the sensibilities of the various local communities. In the Bay Area they were pulled a bit more to the left. Midwest was p

These LLMs learn from their usage. Your efforts may have unintended consequences for its creator and its future users.

I overlapped with Jim McMann (sic?). He had different rules. And the alcohol flowed freely at several of the coupe of football parties I found myself at.

My philosophy was to always add rum to my coke. A sin x sin = virtue right? I think changing doctrines are much more interesting than watered down ones. Although I concede on the watered down temple ceremony.

We do know that Mormon leadership in Germany collaborated with the Nazis. We also know several Mormon GAs in the US were sympathetic to the Nazi party prior to the war. Discernment. Not much historical evidence.

Yikes! I wonder what his DW thought of the place and content of his interviews.

My old stake president, now in first quorum of the 70, loved to add questions to the temple recommend interviews. When I was in a bishopric he asked me in an interview “Mannaz, when was the last time you looked at porn?” My reply, “Peter, tell me, when was the last time you beat your wife?” I was long gone by then in mind and realized the insanity and offensiveness of one grown ass man a

Thank you, Done & Done. Luckily, my family's relationships with kids and among them are good. Everyone takes a 'live and let live' approach to each other's differences. I have said to many that "it is a fool's errand to try to talk someone out of the church." I think many, as was my case, need to run up against a compelling reason to revisit their beliefs to go through the painfu

Fellow ‘throat slitter here’, and in the end, it is all about the money. Don’t you think? It matters not what cruelty is inflicted on others, how many families are broken up, how many may not find a life partner, and so forth. As I posted earlier, whatever they believe maximizes the creation and retention of long term tithe payers is what the 155 will do. I have on adult kid still in. Sh

Let us not forget the true purpose of the temple — lock in full tithe payer behavior. If shorter more childlike ordinances keep people coming that is what will be done. One day it may be a line of kiosks behind the veil with touch-less tap card payment.

You know, they likely showed their love with a ‘court of love’ for that young woman. Seen it, was on a court (in bishopric) bringing a young woman back into full fellowship, who had been disfellowshipped in HS for sleeping with her boyfriend. It was a cruel and unkind thing to put her through and that was the last straw for me. I was gone shortly after that.

Pagan Norse Rune. I was looking for a guiding symbol when I showed up here. In modern divination, the rune ‘mannaz’ is associated with self-awareness, humanity, and the divine spark within. Some might argue that Mormonism robs its members of these very things. From Wikipedia: Mannaz is the conventional name of the /m/ rune ᛗ of the Elder Futhark. It is derived from the reconstructed Prot

For the first half of my life, the church limited my capacity to live the full measure of my existence. Yeah, it changed things. But now I feel like I have a second chance to play the cards I’ve been dealt a lot better and be a better husband, father, and friend.

Translation: self-reliance means “able to be counted on as a reliable tithe payer.” Just putting that out there.

The church cares about holding onto reliable tithe payers. When confused about why the church is doing something, just follow the money. Unless something has changed since I was in a bishopric a long time ago, the elders quorum president was one of the callings where the person being called needed to have a current temple recommend.

Well, the church was pretty okay with being tight with the Nazi Party in Germany leading up to and during WW2. Imagine if the government said, “Hey Mormons, give us lists of all your undocumented members and access to your meetings, or we’ll start taxing you like the corporation you are...” Mormon leadership has proven to be pretty pragmatic when it comes to money.

As an aside, I do intermittent fasting, where I eat one meal several days a week and eat in a 12-hour window most other days. This has given me a different perspective on the whole concept of church fasting.

I knew Clark well professionally when he was a Harvard Business School professor. This is so out of character form the person I knew back then. The church breaks anyone who stays.

This is so true. A friend once told me that when considering antidepressants, finding what works is a bit like doing medical experiments on yourself, and embracing that is part of the process. Plus, something that works now is not guaranteed to be effective for you in the future. They can also be hell to go off of. I have become a much bigger believer in the mind-body connection. One of my personal fantasies is to have an opportunity to attend an event that Bednar is speaking at and stand up and turn my back on him and just wait to see what happens. Wonder if someone would try to manhandle this here mid-60’s dude out of there?

A puzzle for me is that two of his boys were decent guys when I met them early in their academic careers and they were stand up decent guys back then. Night and day difference from dad. Must be their mom’s doing. It has been a few years since I’ve talked with them.
