I know a couple of his adult sons professionaly. My impression is that they are good guys with that 'squeaky clean' TBM appearance. But they do not come off as arrogant, self-rightous, misogynist, or exhibit the other negative 'Bedaresk' attributes. So my question to 'pooped', did you have chance to see what Bednar's family dynamics were with his kids?

Alas, I have been put into the 'not worth the time' category. My DW is TBM and goes but narry a visit or hello from the ward or HP's group - several of which I thought were friends. No home teaching visit even attempted in four years.

If by shadow member you mean going through all the motions but believing some and not all. Rationalizing there is more good than bad. Willing to pay tithing to keep social status in calling s etc. Than I think many, Even outside Mordor. Professionally at conferences when I catch up with Mormons I've known for 10-20 years the first thing they do is talk about their callings. Whose just got called

Confirmation of my 23andMe DNA results! And I like my scotch a wee bit 'peaty'. That should be added to the list.

BUY Provo, yes. They are actually categorize themselves as an 'undergraduate' university. They stopped adding Phd programs some time ago. I'm not sure if they've phased any out over the last 30 something years since I was there. When I interviewed there years ago they emphasized the importance of training (indoctrinating) the next generation of Mormon youth. As a TBM it was a compelling 'mission'

Hard sciences and professional I would agree. But for humanities and other liberal arts not so much. My UG is BYU Provo in hard sciences and had excellent professors.

Adding to ‘Kenc’s comments. I’m faculty at a research university and here is an additional reason. Research record = portability (non-academic speak for being able to get a job at another university). There is a lot of competition for faculty positions. Being able to find a different academic job means you need something like research/publications to set you apart enough from the pack. I ex

It is the new name. If I give it to you I must suffer my life to be taken by disembowelling myself. But if asked by a member I will say that the church would identify me a heretic and apostate. Then they inevitably say "no your not". Last time at ward holiday party my TBM DW defended me by explaining where I stood re church. Man I love her. Have always loved your Reddit name. Mi

My daughter was denied because she has what used to be called asbergers (now it's filed into autism spectrum). She was fine. A+ student. Worked for year to earn money for it. Went on splits sister missionaries most weeks. Had strong recommendations from bishop, stake president, and seminary teacher - all personal friends at the time. But she honestly answered the question of ever being treated fo

I am an ambivalent. I no longer feel the need to self-identify as anything. And I miss George Carlin's humor.

Very arrogant for an area authority to do. It is no simple task to find a good bishop and likewise one that does not get burned out before they tour of duty is up. I know several bishops who would have just thanked god and waited to get released. I knew of one bishop who sold his house as a way to move to another stake and likewise get released from his calling as bishop. Nuts.

'pollythinks' - yes, a well researched and supported point. But I come to rfm in search of greater light and knowledge that is witnessed here by so many. New documents and information are constantly showing up these days. I am as current as the JS papers, MormonThink level, and some of my own investigation. But alas, I am just one person.

And yes, I have no doubts regarding the origins of the book of Mormon - the copying of parts/styles several published writings, mingled with elements of Methodism, frontier revivalist narratives, and the muddled thoughts of a charismatic sex cult founder. Ever want to distress a TBM just pull out a copy of "The Late War" and ask them to read the first few pages...I keep mine next to

That is in relation to the first vision, which was recorded approximately 12 years after the claimed event and in which there was one angelic visitor. My question is regarding the restoration of the priesthood - when was the first record, not a retrospective one - of angelic visitors restoring the priesthood.

This issue has been systemic in church for long long time. If you want to be further sickened by this read “The sins of brother Curtis” by Lisa Davis. An account that goes back to the 70’s. I think one place that may have an effect is states outside of Mordor where mandatory reporting laws may extent to conduct observed outside of the employment context - where lay ministry may not be pr

O/T: The Force is first documented in the near final Star Wars script in January 1976. It was developed further for the Phantom Menace. The notion of ‘the force’ and ‘Jedi’ and other underpinnings of Star Wars is a synthesis of numerous religious and philosophical belief systems. BTW, I saw the first public opening night of Star Wars in 1977. It was epic.

Yes, to those who it affects most like spouse or significant other or kids, yes. Again yes. How much you go into it is where I think you use judgement in terms of how much the other person can process. I think a statement like “I am deeply troubled by the church polygamy in Nauvoo essay and this makes it hard for me to accept that JS could have been called of God. If he wasn’t then where does

Thanks! I’ve done a little more investigation. Here are churches claims. Aaronic Priesthood Restored: May 15, 1829 Melchizedek Priesthood Restored: May 1829 (end of month). In Grant Palmer’s book. No written documentation in letters and journals etc. until mid-1830’s that claim angelic appearances in resroration. JS and OC did claim priesthood was restored in 1830’s around when churc

Question: Is there any contemporaneous record of the restoration of the priesthood? Journal entry or otherwise? Do the journals of those that were present with JS for the event exist and/or are they available? My recollection is no on the first. Not sure on the last. It has been awhile since I read up on this.

It takes some time to 'release the bonds' and that will make you feel less defensive. That will make it easier to be calm. Maybe also pick a couple of items that become a standard retorts. Mine were my personal ethics were in conflict (e.g., I won't lie). My mental health is better (give concrete example of something observable that has changed for you). I can't accept that a man like JS could be
