I am totally oblivious to what people wear. I barely pay attention to what I wear, but my wife notices what everybody wears. She spotted a woman in a commercial that had nothing to do with Mormonism, and she blurted out, "Look, a celestial smile!" What the hell is a celestial smile? Apparently it's the faint outline of a garment's collar under a woman's top, and my wife spotted

My wife and I like to play a game of "Mormon-spotting" while watching TV or out in the world. She's much better at it than I am, and my contribution is usually using my web-surfing skills to verify her suspicions. We were watching an episode of America's Got Talent last night, and my wife pointed at one of the contestants and said, "She's LDS. No doubt about it." "

https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/02/what-is-consistent-about-mitt-romney/ The following paragraph caught my eye comparing Romney's political calculus with the church's history of shifting policies: "At the risk of alienating any readers who have stuck with me, perhaps this is the downside of all the things I admire about Mitt Romney’s Mormonism. Romney takes grave and costly moral

Speculation? But I thought that when Einstein, Sagan, Kaku, et al, spoke about god(s) that we could take it as gospel. No speculation needed once the geniuses have spoken. Isn't that what you've always told us?

Granted my apostasy is from Catholicism, though my first apostate thoughts may also be applicable to Mormonism. I believe it was in 2nd grade at a Catholic school where one of the good nuns was teaching us that the Catholic Church was the "One, True Church" and about the importance of baptism within days of being born. Sister So-and-So had just told us that only baptized Catholics

Hey, whatever it takes for kori to make the point kori wants made. I liken it to how Mormon apologists insist that Joseph Smith didn't literally translate the funerary texts into the Book of Abraham, but that they served as a means to channel his "translation".

I must admit that I never paid that much attention to the Mormons' God-Jesus/Jesus-God shuffle, despite my wife's "Mormon Fun Facts". Your post, though, is yet another example of how everything makes so much sense once one considers that it was all made up. No mental gymnastics, twisted words, or tortured translations required.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink. Though, as Mr. Kirby has demonstrated, drinking the water is no guarantee the horse won't just spit it out.

I'm envious, eod. I would have gladly traded your picture for any of my high school photos. As a freshman, mine was the one that made all the other kids look cool. You're welcome, Class of 1979. My reaction to the photo now is the same as the jock in the movie "Nerds" yelling, "Nerd!"

I would ask you why, and then take it from there. I doubt that it would be out of ignorance about the church, so it would most likely be for a more personal reason; such as a sense of community or trying to impress a fine Mormon lady. If it were the former, I'd probably say, "Hey, as long as you stay away from the kool-aid, knock yourself out and be sure to report back anything you see

I wish I had an answer for you. My wife doesn't think I support her unless I'm sitting next to her in SM. There's a part of her that hopes I will spontaneously convert someday. I also think that, by my being there, she can maintain a normal Mormon facade, though everybody at church already knows that I am non-member who has made it clear that he will never convert. Probably just a matt

The mind is a terrible thing...I just remembered something the teacher said that almost made me lose it. As she was lovingly describing the gift of translation that was given to Joseph Smith, the teacher asked, "Can you imagine how Joseph Smith must have felt as he translated the passage where it was foretold that the church would be restored by Joseph, son of Joseph, as it dawned on him

I have a step-daughter who has returned to the church now that she has children, but she had never really resigned. She had been inactive, and really isn't full-blown TBM now that she's returned. Both she and her mother (my wife) put on a good show of preaching to the Mormon choir, but neither are model Mormons in their own homes. My step-daughter married a devout Catholic who is insistent tha

"Foundation Trilogy" by Isaac Asimov. My teenage self said, "Screw the priesthood! I want to be a psychohistorian." A close second was probably "The Holy Bible". There was a wide disconnect between the lessons the nuns and priests were teaching me from the bible and what I was actually reading in the very same book. Talk about discernment failures among Morm

But God!? How do we know that God didn't hide Lehi's DNA by making it indiscernible from Native American DNA? It wouldn't be too hard for somebody who can create fossils dating back to before the creation of the Earth to make our faith stronger. (There's no way that makes sense, and yet that's how those who have faith explain it to me.)

Since I'm a nevermo, I never needed to make an exit; though there were a couple books that prevented my entrance. The first was "Rough Stone Rolling," buy Richard Bushman. Though it was recommended to me by a First Councilor to help me overcome my doubts about joining my wife's church, it actually raised more questions than it answered and directed me to issues about the church that

Apparently this year's theme for "Come, Follow Me" is the Book of Mormon, complete with new study books. We ended up sitting in the pew a little too long after SM and my wife thought it would be nice to sit in on Sunday School, which was setting up its visual aids in front of the podium. This first lesson was "Introductory Pages of the Book of Mormon". It was the usual

Not directly. What I have heard has always been by someone from the stake or a visiting GA. One such GA told of another GA who had an acquaintance in England who was a renown doctor. The doctor made all of the observations and objections any rational person would make about the church, BoM, and Joseph Smith. The GA finally convinced the doctor to just read the BoM before passing judgment,
