I can't help but wonder if the same "bishops" who stand by and allow children to be victimized like this, aren't warning their own children to stay away from the victims (lest they wind up with a licked cupcake).

Thanks for the tip. MacKay is definitely the author I was thinking of. Here's a link to all his stuff at The Atlantic: https://www.theatlantic.com/author/mckay-coppins/ The first is the other one I had in mind but couldn't remember: a way-biased review of Under the Banner of Heaven There's another about Mittens being right And, ironically, there's another piece about a "secr

I hate that that happened to you, messygoop. I assume that your mother believes you now. My TBM SiL bragged for years that my brother "worked with the scouts" (she probably still brags about it, but they're shunning us). I don't know how to describe the feeling I get -- not a premonition, just a bad vibe -- but it always makes me uneasy, because he was never a scout himself, a

Perhaps, but then his fight--if there was one--would be with that particular church. But I think "...played the piano at church..." is just as meaningful to most people as "...played the piano at the Methodist/Lutheran/Baptist church...", and uses fewer words. I think there needs to be a reason to be that specific. And I think there was (he's subtly criticizing it). In fa

> the > whole Puff Piece is just an "aren't I cute" > moment for the writer as he uses every cute trick > he knows to bask in his own pretentiousness. I can understand that critique of the style, but it's generally the nature of the culture and arts component of magazines like this (IMO). Writers tend to squeeze as much as they can out of as few words as possible, b

Interesting. She clearly "gets it," and probably because her dad is "apostate." Like a lot of people change their perspective when they discover that one of their children doesn't fit the requisite conformity. Or they become less judgmental when they have their own fall from grace. I'm speaking broadly, of course, and not pointing at the author (who, as I said, seems to re

There's a piece in The Atlantic about returning to the piano. Not too far in the author mentions the Mormon Church, and practicing at the ward house, and that his mom was ward organist. https://www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2022/10/rediscovering-the-piano-childhood-memories-adulthood/671706/ I love the piano, but when I got to the Mormon reference, I mentally grimaced, recalling a co

I read that there were some Mormons in the Donner party, and also in the rescue (the Mormon battalion).

Yikes! You are correct. What was I thinking? I guess I misread the post above. I guess my mind was thinking "Donner Party" = wagon train = Mountain Meadows Massacre.

Sigh. I would say it's unbelievable, except that it is... > "They had their dresses pre-approved > by the administration, but when they showed up, > they were told that because their body was not the > same as the picture of the model, they were not > allowed to wear that dress,” Did the girls not have the same bodies when their dresses were approved?

Suddenly I got an image of temple's being announced by Jon Lovitz' Liar character from Saturday Night Live! We're gonna build 100 temples... no, no, 1000 temples. That's what I meant. Yeah. And we're gonna build one in Beijing. No, all over China. And India too. That's the ticket. And we're gonna turn the Taj Mahal into a temple, and the White House. Yeah, yeah. And we'll turn Sa
