Our Vegas group saw it together yesterday. I was hoping to ride the roller coaster of nostalgia and poke fun at my former beliefs at the same time. I did get goose pimply at a couple of the songs, those are feelings of nostalgia--nothing more. I felt sad at the broken promises mormonism and the plan of salvation (or whatever they call it these days) represents too. Overall, the movie was

Paulk, I am so sorry for what your family is going through. From your posts, I can tell you are well informed about your wife's disease. I really hate how these things are covered up in families and treated like a dirty secret. I'm sure you know about the genetic component and that there must be several other people who have, are, or will be suffering. Just think how much better it would

In this friendship is it possible judgement and maybe competition was going both ways? Maybe you aren't judging and looking down on her marriage but maybe she feels bad about it and interacting with you sometimes makes her feel worse. Her attack seems like she was felt threatened and hurt so she lashed out. Can this friendship ever become one of supporting/loving/accepting each other without

Essay on race--throws the past under the bus. Aren't there some conference talks or something that say things like the church has always been at the forefront and God never has been rascist? Stuff they said about prop 8 along with fine they got for lying about their illegal fund raising activities (pretending it was a grass roots individual member thing when it was totally top down and assign

As a missionary, I knew our tactics weren't strictly honest. But, with a premise, that was feed to me from birth, that the church would save this person's soul and that the devil was striving against us using every tactic, it seemed necessary. As in "ends justify means". Fighting fire with fire. I sincerely believed I was helping people using unethical means. That right there is

It is just a thought stopping phrase to encourage people to suppress their own judgement in favor of what an authority figure says. Control the narrative, sooth the cog dis of the masses when they see contradictory messages from other sources.

Can relate. It is so frustrating. It helped me to remember that the church is false independent of me, it isn't my fault JS made it up, my only "fault" is figuring it out. Looking back, I was looking for validation from my family that my new worldview was "okay" and nothing to do with my mental health issue. That isn't ever going to happen. No matter how many times and way

So printing press burning started in Kirtland? Very interesting find indeed. I wonder if Oakes can explain how this one is actually quite legal as well.

You mentioned a sister and brother whom you no longer have contact with and another sister with whom you discussed your stolen ipad. How does she feel about what is happening? Has she been any help? How does your Son feel about it? What are their comments? Have they been helpful?

Religion says it teaches love but in reality teaches love our tribe, hate everyone else. Even if they don't teach explicitly taking matters into their own hands, they all expect the groups they don't like, ie the "sinners", to "get it" whether in this world or the next. Actions like Orlando make some religious people nervous and they try to deflect saying it was the other

onendaus just finished reading all of ziller's reviews on Amazon. Neighbor wants to know if onendagus is ok. hysterical loud laughing is alarming. Ziller also has a personal troll who follows him around, makes comments and complains about all his reviews. onendagus can't decide who is funnier, ziller or troll. Troll is an ignorant tbm complaining about ziller being ignorant of mormonism.

I always wondered why God didn't talk to me, figured it was because I was evil to the core or something. I do remember reading about the supposed gifts we all have: "To some is given the gift to believe others" or something like that. I tried to take comfort in that. I also heard the stuff they say like: "well God doesn't need to give you a witness because you have ALWAYS known it

I like how you articulated this. I was definitely an emperor's clothes guy. I'm fascinated by the people both in and out of the church who say they "really felt" something. In a way its kind of scary and makes me cautious about what we can convince ourselves of.

http://www.holyfetch.com/famous%20people/alice_cooper.html The Brighamites like to claim sole right to the word "mormon" but the rest of the world can't get that crap straight. If by "mormon" you mean churches who trace themselves to Joseph Smith and have the canonized the BOM, then yes he certainly was. His grandfather was even an apostle. If you go by the LDS church

Our Vegas group of Exmos was planning a meetup where we do exactly what you did...imbibe and lampoon the movie together. Unfortunately it isn't released anywhere here yet. Most mormon kitsch movies do come here but I'm wondering if the overabundance of Religious B movies from the Easter season has discouraged the theaters from picking this one up.

Nuh Uh. The Nephites had chariots, horses, armor and fine steel swords not to mention, forts, wine to get the enemy drunk and prophets to tell em where/when to attack. The pagan Vikings would have been toast.

"It is difficult to deal seriously with Joseph Smiths impudent fraud." One of my favorite quotes by an actual Egyptologist. One day I saw a post where someones said something like, why don't you just spend a little bit of time learning about egyptian stuff for yourself and then you can have your own opinion of the boa instead of relying entirely on everyone else. So I thought, w

The Power of a Positive No by William Ury. Helped me transition out and learn that each time I was saying yes, i was also saying no to something else. We get conditioned to say yes to everything as mormons and feel guilty when we say no.
