Both as an investigator and as a TBM, I found the phrase, “I testify that…” baffling and meaningless. The speaker using this phrase actually meant nothing more than “I believe” such-and-such, but oddly, seemed to expect a response of surprised awe and reverence. All I felt was bored disinterest. If you wish to convince me of a point, show me the facts / evidence. Explain your l

Did you have to claim to be of the same faith as the churches you play in, in order to be hired as the organist/pianist? I'll bet they never even asked. Unless you did, you have no obligation to believe any particular way in order to play in a church. "Getting paid to do what I used to do for free brings a smile to my face..." as it should! Enjoy your new exmo life and vocation, B

Rambo, a miserable time will be had by all... UNLESS you state clear boundaries AND both of your parents agree to honor them. If they cannot agree, don't go! Possible boundaries for this vacation: 1) You will not set foot in a Mormon church or temple. 2) You will not talk with Mormon missionaries or leaders. 3) There will be no conversations about Mormonism. Even if they agree: Have m

Realizing the truth about the church means realizing that only WE can know what path is best for us. Great post! Good luck, Spooge. Hope your wife recognizes the truth at some point.

Chris, you are an amazing young man ("young" from my standpoint, at least!) I always enjoy reading your posts. You have more wisdom than most of us less-young ones had at your age! And from what you have said, you managed to snag a wife who is an excellent match for you. That is wonderful! When my "shelf" became heavy, I realized that I had hard but sincere questions an

When a missionary returns home early from his mission, the entire ward generally assumes that he has committed a moral transgression. (The reason for the early return, whatever it is, should be none of their business, of course; but this is what happens in Mormon churches.) My guess is that your bishop wanted to make it clear to the ward that you were not guilty of “sin,” so that they would

You are right about the "thinly veiled threats and guilt trips." How fortunate that 1) your shrink had the smarts to see what the problem really was (your trying to be a missionary when you don't believe in Mormonism) and 2) that you escaped the MTC before you got shipped off to your mission site. <whew> And like Mo Larkey, I'm wondering... how did it go after you went home?

From Paul's letter to Timothy: 2 Timothy 1:5 "When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also." It is surprising how many female names used today are from the Bible, particularly considering how little is said in the Bible about these women.

The fact that DH invited the missionaries to come back tells me that DH has already made up his mind to get the boys/family to be active attendees. That being the case, it doesn't matter what you tell the bishop, the missionaries, or anyone else from the church. They will just ignore you, the semi-apostate; and deal with your dearly cooperative husband, even if they have to arrange your son's b

Of course, it will not happen with the consent of the leadership. But what a shock and wake-up call THAT day will be for many Mormons, when the leadership can no longer spin the truth or weasel out of it!

Anyone posting here is wiser than when they were a TBM. Thought about WiserThanBefore but with some names, the gender is unclear and I wanted mine to be clear.

I can understand the young couple's being caught off guard, CA girl; but weren't there any older P'hood holders there, like the bride's or groom's father, to object?

The Mormon church has no problem preventing a non-Mo family from attending a son's or daughter's (temple) wedding. The Church wants the YM or YW fattening its membership rolls, but does not care about the feelings of the non-member parents. With the above scout scenario, "You can't be leaders but we want your boys," it is now the Mormon adults who are unwanted (as leaders.) Gasp, s

… and to devote a whole TV show to exposing that B.S. THAT TOOK BALLS and I admire him tremendously for it! Shawn was a “nobody” when he first did this, on his very first show. He did not yet have the experience and confidence he has now, but he took on the powerful LDS Church anyway. Shawn is extremely knowledgeable about the evidence available showing the Mormon Church’s many

And how is it possible for missionaries to not know that polygamy is STILL doctrine, as is blatantly clear from D&C 132?! Investigators or new members might be fooled temporarily. But MISSIONARIES?

Delete the first clause and the first 4 words of the next (your main point is more powerful without this clause) and change the word before "decision" from "this" to my. Thus: "The continued hostility displayed by the organization against LGBT communities through its political activities and communication to members (like Mr. Packer’s recent conference talk) has mad

"Increasingly, young people saw religion as intolerant, hypocritical, judgmental and homophobic." Hardly any wonder people are not flocking to, or staying in, churches! Many interesting points in this article.

In the past, the choice was nearly always a knee-jerk "the church." However, members are beginning to choose their loved one over the church. Even members who are not faced with this choice in their immediate family are beginning to take a look at the extreme anti-gay views of the church and to question their validity. I agree with cl2 that "If they push this too hard, th

Related to this is, as MJ puts it, “a realization that the gays were not going to shut up.” Light bulb moment, Leadership! --Nor will their families and friends “shut up.” The apostles will continue to be held accountable not only by Mormon gays and their supporters but even by the non-Mormon public (not by everyone, but certainly by a large portion.) The LDS leadership has eluded a

My favorite sentence: "It's LAUGHABLE that the Mor(m)on church would call him an apostle and a prophet of God, have him speak to the membership and the rest of the world who choose to listen...... and say when he speaks, he speaks for God......and then...... actually CHANGE his words before they go to print." He-LLO, Mormons! The emperor has no clothes...

The website Angsty provided above makes the program *look* very successful. However, since the church loves to boast about its successes, its rather extended silence on PEF suggests that the program is no exception to the church's burgeoning economic woes.
