When I was 15, my mother lay dieing in a hospital in Lancaster, CA, and my alcoholic father had been carted away again somewhere. He was in and out of jail and halfway houses, mostly for drunk driving and disturbing the peace. I lived in a small hamlet in the Mojave Desert, and no longer had electricity or phone due to non-payment of bills. Eventually I didn't even have water, and the county fina

Your recent post was one of the most interesting we've gotten in a while. Good luck on that whole thing.

They are places of attack. I mean, they're worthless for jogging or picnicking, because Mormons don't allow that. But should you wander onto the temple grounds anywhere, missionaries come out and hassle you. For instance, when my daughter lived in San Diego, DW wanted to finally see the big Alice in Wonderland LDS temple there. So here we are, three members, and two sister missionaries made a bee

When I went on my mission, several people scraped together the monthly amount (only $100 back in the '60s!) and sent it directly to me in Italy. I cashed the check at a bank that would do it and converted it to lira. Then I paid my rent, food, and incidentals with it. It was plenty (went a lot farther then), and I got to keep anything that I didn't use. But it was not fair to a poor family whe

I served in Congo for the US govt between 2005 and 2008, and during that time they had four young white American guys and one Africa-American guy (can you believe an African-American serving an LDS mission?), and they wouldn't assign them anywhere but in Cameroon. Cameroon is in the same mission, but less nasty than either DR Congo or Republic of Congo. The mission also included Gabon and Central

We always ran into schizophrenics who were happy to take the lessons. Every branch I served in in Italy had one or two really bad ones. I went back and lived there for four years in the late 90's, and we had two severe cases in the ward I was in. They LOVED Mormonism! and had such a good time performing the rituals. Sadly, both of them are now institutionalized. Their respective cases got worse a

Making fragrant coffee, eating a bowl of local wild huckleberries picked by Yakama Indians, reading our local fish wrapper, getting ready at my own speed, and going to the farmers' market, where sometimes all I do is mill about drinking lemonade and munching kettle corn. Yo ho!, yo ho!, it's an apostate's life for me. (It's true. I've probably been to Disneyland too many times.)

I'm taking a long walk on the Yakima Greenway, and I see a guy coming toward me. He's about 6'5" or more, 300 pounds if any pounds at all, and is wearing a tank top and shorts and sandals. He's of a greenish appearance, much like the Jolly Green Giant. When I get closer I see that the green is from his fully tattooed body, from his bulging neck down to his ankles. He has a small goatee and e

It's just too foreign now to give a proper judgment, but I'm just so happy it's back up.

But good luck! Stay strong. And prepare for total rejection by them and everyone else.

In early 2009, a a$$hat of a bishop's counselor came to the house to "call" my wife to be the gospel "doctrine" teacher. I had just resigned in January, and he acted angry when he came. I didn't like this guy, anyway. He'd had the gall (under the direction of the inspired bishop) to call me as Sunday school president after I had already announced that I was resigning. (Yeah, I

As one of my workmates once said, "Mormons are their own worst enemies." So true. Now they've "won" you over, too, I see. Good job. Keep up that missionary work. In a sort of perverse way, I'm glad you had the experience. now you know.
