My wife and adult son and I were living in Germany and celebrated my return from Pakistan by vacationing in southern England despite the fact that it was November. I was active in church back then and wanted to go to a local ward or branch, so we ended up in the Weymouth branch. It was Remembrance Day. The entire branch were wearing poppies, and the first and only time ever, we saw them suddenly

I used to work with this pretty and high-ranking government woman who had left the church. She was an RM and even had a master's degree in English from BYU. I liked her a lot, but at the time I was active LDS and disapproved of things she said. She used to tell me stories about the apostles, with whom she had quite a bit of contact because she used to proof-read their talks for conference. She

That's purely anecdotal, unless someone out there is keeping stats. It would appear that many ex-Mo's who want to retain a sort of belief, but one that is much less structured, find a home with the Unitarians.

And are you getting by okay? It's sad to think of you all laid up like that.

But it was a long time ago (1969), "back in the day," as they say. Back in the day of mission farewells and church programs with your picture on them, and people singing "I'll Go Where You Want Me to Go, Dear Lord." Everyone cried at the end, then there were refreshments somewhere. In my interview I was asked where I wanted to go. I said, "Italy." "Well," t

But, hey, my cynicism thinks that because you're active LDS, you can only perceive it as "persecution." Ahem. 1. Check on the main page of exmormon.org, and you'll find a disclaimer that this is not for "defence of the faith." 2. Who are you talking to? We are all former bishops, members of bishoprics, RS presidents, members of RS presidencies, members of stake presidenc

Or so they said. I wasn't there. I was 15, and my mom lay dying from lung cancer. She was only one day away from death, and the branch president put his hands on her head to give her a blessing and, according to other church members who may or may not have been present, "released" her from her suffering. She died within the day, and everyone said it was the miracle of a priesthood bless

I don't think we can, really. It's probably a form of mental masturbation or something, but I would like to know why--I mean really, WHY--Mormons act the way they do. I got to thinking more about this after reading the entry by "foundoubt." Considering the Christian behavior, acts, and attitudes of others, why do members of "the only 'true' church" treat others the way they do

I once innocently posted a thread asking whether or not a nomination of Mitt Romney would cause problems for the Mormon church. Admin took it down immediately, before anyone had even responded. Their response to my questioning it was that my thread was "political." This post is obvious use of "encapsulated agenda." Whether or not one agrees with it is irrelevant. It is clea

I have to drive 3 1/2 hours to play music for a lousy 30 minutes. But I accepted it so that I could see the city where the event takes place. I'll have to spend the night, too. So I says to DW, I says, "You're going along, right? I mean, you keep saying you want to go there. Now's you chance." And she says, "I'd really love to go there finally. But I have a Relief Society presidenc

Therefore, you were not sufficiently bored. In fact, more boredom in a post-Mormon life would only indicate to me that you were shirking your LDS responsibilities in a bad way. What can be said? As an ex-Mormon, the world is your oyster. You have a whole extra day to do real stuff. Even sleeping in and watching cartoons in your jim-jams while eating waffles is so much less boring than PEC meeting

When one is sent to a foreign country, the mission president will confiscate his or her passport, even though it is illegal to separate one from one's own passport, even when the individual has a legal residency permit. (The permit is no good without the visa foil in the passport, and the passport must be accessible to the person.) I don't know why they think they can get away with this.

Yeah, I'm being fresh here. But I want answers, dammit! It's not just the males who have "problems," as it were, with Packer's "little factory." Am I right? As boys, we normally got grilled about this during any interview we had, and even later in life as adults. Before the strict standardization of temple recommend interviews, I was asked quite plainly about it several tim

Mmmmph, Jesus good! Argh, devil bad! That's all that "basic gospel concepts" are about. But The Problem with Mormonism is hardly that. It's about being manipulated and lied to, and pushing weird and perverse teachings under the rug so that they're not immediately visible. They will pull them out later in life, and spring them on you when it's inopportune--like when you go to the temple

In my ward they read a statement by someone (First Presidency? I'm not sure) that said we were to turn in all past lesson manuals, whether they be priesthood, Sunday school, or Relief Society manuals. They were not to be retained for talks or lessons, as we all used to do. (You know--say, you had a talk coming up. You might dig into one of your old priesthood or Sunday school manuals to find some

Non-Mormons and ex-Mormons are drunks and "addicted" to coffee. The fact that I drink a cup of coffee for breakfast EVERY DAY is PROOF! PROOF!, I tell you. RM son is a wine snob, so he "must be alcoholic." Right. Let's all go down to 7/11 and get those cigarettes.

They fix cars, dammit--like all the time! If you're a guy, you've watched what Larry, Moe, and Curly will do to a car. And to each other, too. One of them brought my foster mother a fuel pump for her car AT NIGHT, IN THE RAIN, AND INSTALLED IT FOR HER! And if that wasn't enough, he happened to have JUST THE RIGHT FUEL PUMP for her make and model and year. Proof enough the either Manny, Moe, or

Did anyone listen to "Car Talk" today on NPR? A woman had a story about driving through Utah in her old Toyota, when it just quit while they were up in the mountains. It wouldn't start or even make a noise when they tried. Along came an older guy in a white car. He stopped and got out, and he was dressed totally in white. He came over to the car and asked what was wrong. "It ju

Two thirds of the counted membership (13+ million) is "inactive" or out entirely. Many are dead, and if they died in obscurity from the church, the church doesn't know this so keeps them on until they are 110. (This means that my father died in 1966 and is still on the rolls.) All people who resign fit into that one-third. Each ward or branch regularly received a message from LDS Inc. w
