Okay, I'll be serious for once. My direct line goes back to Jamestown in 1620. I also have Mayflower ancestors. This means that I am related to a lot of people here in the US of A, since many lines descend from these early immigrants. These early lines crossed and recrossed in marriage, so the relationships can be complex. Sometimes I think I could be my own grandpa (remember that little song?

None. Their "secrets" are white and delightsome, just too sacred to talk about openly.

Stand up to give the lesson, pause while looking over the group, and then shout, "This lesson's a pile o' ship!" Leave. :^D

I admire what you've done! I think that when I do the same, the proverbial fecal matter will strike the air mover. What it will mean to the family is that I will now have two major strikes agin me. First being when I was excommunicated in 1989 and fought and scratched my way back in (what the hell was I thinking??? Right, I WASN'T!) and second, resignation (when it happens). Coming from deep Morm

Yup. Home/Visiting Teaching, giving lessons, administrative calling, temple visits, toilet cleaning, and more add up to a lot of busy work that leaves little time for honest study.

Bottom line is, I'm not a descendant of HJ's line. But I am a cousin. Distant cousin. The distance is pleasing to me! 4th cousin 5 times removed.

My "relationship" (I just shivered at that word) with HJ is through a common ancestor, up my tree and then back down to him, via his mother. Up my tree: Moose->Moose Dad->Moose grandfather->Pheby Ann Cook->Joseph Ridley Cook->David Cook->Mary Maria Fuller->David Fuller->David Fuller->Edward Fuller->John Fuller Down his: John Fuller->Shubael Fulle

Well, I certainly didn't say my suggestion was the only option, just the easiest from my own perspective. If my wife were concerned about me refusing a teaching or speaking assignment, imagine how she'd feel when she got word of my lesson or talk! So, what's good for you is good for you.

I'm still "in the boat" for my wife's sake as well. Maybe the only difference is that she does not know of my unbelief yet (she will soon, though). But if I were asked to teach or give a talk, I would rather just say no. That's the easiest method I can think of to handle the situation, depending on how your wife would view your refusal. Mine wouldn't worry. Yours might. In any cas

I would suggest that, when posting arguments against ideas church members have, like the rock in the hat vs. the Urim and Thummim, you list the appropriate link on lds.org. Their denial should disappear, if they have a-n-y semblance of reason operable! Of course we know that some are more blind than others. *sigh*

Generally, in the USA at least, religion is on the decline, including the LD$ church. http://religiondispatches.org/u-s-christianity-is-dead-long-live-u-s-christianity/ To me, though, the key idea is expressed at the bottom and applies to TSCC especially, IMO. "Religion is not going anywhere anytime soon, regardless how people may identify themselves. But business as usual among exi
