This morning I jumped on the board to see any feedback on General Conference and I kept seeing this message:

The database connection failed. Please check your database configuration in include/db/config.php. If the configuration is okay, check if the database server is running.

Is TSCC attacking the board?

I thought the same thing.

That's something I wondered too! Yet the board active during the second session of boring Conference!

That is happening a lot, especially overnight. I doubt the board is under continual attack.

It happens nearly every night around 23:00 mountain time.

Something is strange, as that would be far more maintenance than any comparable forum.

Not sure I would be pointing fingers at LDS Inc, as they would risk insurmountable PR devastation if it were exposed.

You are absolutely right. It is more maintenance than any normal board. There aren't any sinister Mormon reasons for this, that is just how the board is run. :)

I am trying HARD to find a way to NOT do a date delete. If anyone knows a lot about db optimization mail me.

I was wondering that myself. I love reading the forums and hoped that new insight would be shared on this conference. I'm hoping, if I understand it correctly, that the big lawsuit with Monson would have caused bigger changes and hopefully allow more members to have their own "aha moment" of clarity on the religion. It seems more often the site shows that "database server lost connection" on the page when I try to go to the recovery board.

Don't know what's causing it but it has been a daily deal.

There's some nightly maintenance they do every night from about 11PM to 12AM every night. Not sure what it is, exactly, but SusanI/S has confirmed it happens daily in past posts.

This most likely means that you need to configure your MySQL server to allow more simultaneous connections.

The issue probably arises when too many users are on the board at the same time or when a search engine crawler stops by for a visit.

Volume has caused our ISP to modify our server setup. I am hoping this will make us more stable. That took a couple hours this afternoon

Yes. Our expenses have jumped this year. Need to find a better setup. Volume is also a huge factor.

Hopefully more volume = more people escaping the cult!

I got a notification that the site was down for maintenance at one time. Other times the pages won't load.

And when it happens feel free to write me and remind me! I will dig out the twitter password and post when we know we are down. Not for the nightly service thingie but when we crash. Do you think that would be a help? Would you guys like that?

you must think I um, like know how to do that! You forget I am n00b admin. I stay far far far away from that and I don't even want or know how to get into that part of the program. I am not thrilled with how much I CAN get into! My big fear has always been wiping the whole site out or something. And sometimes it is WingNet, most of the time because of weather, that goes down so that wouldn't work.

But lol, I will take that as a compliment that you even thought I could do something like that :)

Possible LDSinc hackers.

I'm sure with all the money...it will be easy for the morg to pay someone to hack!

I was unable to check in for over two hours beyond the usual nightly hour when it is off-line and then I gave up and went to bed.

First time this happened to me I immediately thought it might be a denial of service attack. How is the board funded?

Well, there is a very very very VERY VERY kind person that donates most of the base/monthly charge. But then there have been a LOT of overages with DoS attacks and crashes. We do our damnedest to make every PENNY of the yearly donation money count. We NEED that money to redo the front page and I really REALLY want to hire the Phorum guy to do some custom stuff for us but our money keeps getting sucked up with the tech problems. Major GRRRRR. It causes me physical pain and keeps me up at night every time we have to spend that donated money. It is so very very kind of you guys to help and we see it as lol, well a sacred trust.

BTW, I don't let Eric tell me who donates. He is the only one that knows. There is no reason for me to know and I would NEVER want anyone to say donations effected moderation. The amount that was donated this year just gobsmacked me. So very kind.

Maybe they should move this board to the Proboards? They are a free forum, and I like their set-up. You can "like" people's posts- which I wish you could do here so that I don't necessarily have to reply, but can show my support of a post. You can also have smileys and post pictures and stuff.
Just a thought.

We don't want +1s or "likes", we want people to contribute content even if it is only an "I agree with you". Smileys are some kind of a security issue I don't understand. Pics in posts went because of autopsy, crime scene and porn. I am always happy to post pics on our pic site and you can post links to them. We have the majority of things turned off here, one nice thing about Phorum is it is very flexible.

I belong to another board that has "likes" and I still comment and participate, but saying "I agree" or "That" over and over again isn't always beneficial, and I'm glad to be able to post my support in a "like."
It was just an idea. Proboards are also easily accessible by an app. I'm not complaining about this board. It's a bummer that you have to put such a tight control on things because of juvenile people, but I understand.

Oh, and you can also turn off features you don't want on proboards, too. If you are on the lookout for a free forum, I would say it's a good option.
