Nephi is kind of an ass hole.

He's a falsely-humble, smug TBM who just won't just shut up. He keeps acting like he has access to great knowledge and has seen greater things than anyone else. He acts like he's never committed the same supposed wrongs as everyone else, but he's sadomaschoistic like a good TBM should be.

When his brothers Lemuel and Laman say "again, our younger brother tries to rule over us", they're just saying 'stop telling us what to do!' To be constantly bombarded with all the pestering and the guilt trips, and then when they tried to push back, nephi also used that as evidence that he was right and they needed to do what he said, because God loved them.

What a mind-fuck.

The most cultish part of TBM behavior is about the only thing that comes straight out of the book of mormon.

Nephi wears a skirt in my family.

Let's not forget it's a book of fiction. It's like telling prince charming to quit hitting on Cinderella. There's nobody there, and the premise isn't a healthy one.

Good point Cold-Dodger. I'm thinking that maybe Joseph Smith

fashioned him after himself..... or at least how he envisioned

himself to be. What an ego maniacal asshole he must have been.

He robs and murders Laban and kidnaps his servant. He should have been executed as a capital felon.

Well wait a minute. Laban did try to kill him and his brothers, and before that he stole all of his wealth... that story is not black and white either way. Just sayin'.

Nephi is not in harmony with LDS Inc. Standards for decency
and morality.

instead of passively letting the "little brother" call the shots in the family.

If any of my kids try to parent or boss the other kids, I intervene. It's not their place and I don't want their relationships to get screwed up by it. (BTW, there are only 5 years between the oldest and the youngest. If I had a bigger year span between them, and the older ones were involved with babysitting or childcare, it might be a little different)

That makes me wonder just how different the "small plates" actually were from the "Book of Lehi"(116 lost pages).

Was Lehi the protagonist in his own book, or did he still ride bitch to his youngest son?

And don't forget what an astute parent Lehi is.

He, sagely, uses the "why can't you be like your perfect
brother" angle with L & L. We all know that that is the best
way to create a perfect family.

All it does is build up resentment between siblings.

Small town in Juab county in central Utah. It derives it's name from a character in a work of fiction.

I think JS modeled the father son relationship of Nephi and Lehi after what he thought his and his fathers relationship was or should be.

Lehi, the wise sage who dreams dreams, talks with god and loves Nephi more that his other children. Nephi, the chosen sibling, is the defacto leader and provider of the family.

...fictional hero that Joseph Smith created based on his idealization of himself - a narcissistic fantasy he created out of his past and would copy in his future.

Younger brother, has kind of a loser father, buff, devout, delusional, uses magic objects (liahona/peepstones), accomplishes amazing feats (builds boat/builds temples), obtains a following, moves cross-country, is responsible for the word of God, etc., etc.

Just remember folks:

The BOM is a work of fiction.

Poorly written
Bad ideas
Ridiculous story line
Bad grammar
typos
errors
anachronisms

However many authors were involved doesn't matter.

It's still a piece of crap.

So here's a big question

Because most people are bamboozled into reading the the Book of Mormon as history, they miss the opportunity to criticize it as fiction.

Looking at 1st Nephi, it's useful to ask "why would the author (Joseph smith, Not God) put this in here?"

Honestly, sometimes I have no idea what the author was going for. For example, in ether, "smote off the head of shiz and he stood up and gasped for breath and then died". I think some of these ridiculous parts get included just because the author isn't thinking except that he trying to imitate the tone of another ridiculous book, but one that actually belongs to an ancient mythology (the bible).

The BofM narrative is fairly logical and rational, but peppered with wtf moments just to remind us that "All things are possible with God" or "reason can't make sense of everything, have faith."

Nephi is the alter ego of Smith. When Smith wrote the Book of Mormon, he wrote it as a kind of autobiography. Smith has several other alter egos in the book.
